    Raveneau

Francois Raveneau, an elusive but stoic vigneron, founded the domaine in 1948. It is now run by Bernard and Jean-Marie, two brothers. They have miniscule yields of hand harvested Chardonnay in many of Chablis finest sites. Each of their holdings is no larger than a suburban house. This Burgundy has a cult following.

I ordered a bottle of the 2010 Chablis 1er Cru les Butteaux at the impeccable Au Fil du Zinc restaurant in Chablis and immediately grabbed my pen to scribble a tasting note. This is such a scintillating Chablis, one that encapsulates everything great about the 2010 vintage. The nose is mineral through and through--imagine getting down on your hands and knees and just inhaling limestone after a shower. The palate continues that tensile, mineral-driven theme. It is incredibly tense, perhaps benefiting from a slight, but pleasant reduction towards the finish, with awesome length and precision. What a fantastic Butteaux from Domaine Raveneau.

The 2011 Chablis Butteaux is subtle, gracious and utterly impeccable in its elegance. All the elements are simply in the right place. Articulate, energetic and nuanced, the 2011 captures all the qualities of this 1er Cru site, in miniature. This is another of the more approachable 2011s from Raveneau.

The 2014 Chablis Butteaux 1er Cru from Domaine François Raveneau is drinking beautifully, even though I am fully aware of committing infanticide. It is one of my favorite vineyards – and in my view, an underrated one – from a benchmark Chablis growing season. A stunning, razor-sharp bouquet offers limestone and petrichor aromas, and hints of walnut and shucked oyster shells develop with aeration. That fresh marine influence translates into a palate that displays exquisite balance and just a hint of toffee apple, closing in slightly toward the finish. There is so much tension and grace here. Brilliant.

An overtly floral nose speaks of elegant and admirably pure aromas of quinine, white-fleshed fruit and a plethora of classic Chablis elements and in particular, iodine. There is excellent volume to the concentrated and powerful medium weight plus flavors that flash evident minerality on the markedly dry, youthfully austere and highly complex finale. This is quite tightly wrapped and as is usually the case, it should prove to be long-lived. Excellent.

The 2013 Chablis 1er Cru Fôrets has a very attractive, pine needle-tinged bouquet with a subtle mineral element (wet limestone) in the background. The palate is fresh on the entry with crisp acidity, clearly a level up from the village cru, with hints of shaved ginger flourishing toward the finish. This is showing nicely. There is something nonchalant about this Fôrets, although it needs perhaps just another year in bottle.

A cool and airy nose freely offers up its aromas of green apple, quinine, shellfish and lemon zest. The utterly delicious but solidly intense flavors are sleek and mineral-infused while displaying very fine length on the bone-dry, clean and well-balanced finale. This too is very promising, indeed it's even better than it usually is, and should develop well over the next decade plus.

The 2015 Chablis 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre has a tightly wound bouquet with a slight fumé note at first, then a trace of sea cave and a tang of the sea. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity. This has wonderful harmony, a dash of nutmeg and spice that emerges toward the finish and a very persistent aftertaste that will not go away (not that you want it to). As is often the case, this is aromatically quite similar to the Montée de Tonnerre with just a touch more wood in evidence. Here too the slightly richer flavors possess an equally gorgeous texture with a bit more mid-palate stuffing to the intense, powerful and bone-dry finale that exhibits simply huge length. This beauty is even firmer, and I wouldn't even think about opening a bottle for at least 10 years, research purposes aside!

A restrained nose immediately makes clear that it could be from nowhere else but Chablis with its array of mineral reduction, oyster shell, iodine, spice, floral and citrus aromas. There is once again excellent volume and intensity to the even more concentrated big-bodied flavors that deliver huge length on the bone-dry, austere and compact finish. This is presently a block of stone that is going to need at least some patience and a wine that should repay 15+ years of cellaring. Moreover, it is not only a candidate for wine of the vintage honors but could legitimately vie for being one of the all-time great examples of Raveneau Clos. I shudder to think at what price it will trade at but if you can afford it, don't hesitate.

The palate is well balanced with a waxy-textured opening. There’s good depth for a Village Cru, and a slightly pithy, peach skin finish. Excellent.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)

(5-Star Wine) Pale to mid lemon, a little oak, noticeable power but not heat. There is quite a wealth of fruit here and it kicks on to another dimension as if it were 1er cru. Exceptional persistence. Full and ethereal. Cannot imagine better Drink from 2024-2028.

Rich and explosive in the glass, the 2013 Chablis Blanchot races across the palate with gorgeous richness and pure intensity. White and yellow peach, spice, jasmine and lemon oil are some of the many notes that flesh out in this utterly captivating and expressive Chablis from Raveneau.

The 2016 Chablis Blanchots Grand Cru has a complex, quite beguiling bouquet with scents of dried honey, acacia, pressed flowers and orange blossom that unfold in the glass and attain quite a high level of intensity. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, taut and poised with hints of spice, orange rind and grapefruit towards the pixelated finish. What a great Blanchots from Isabelle Raveneau. Tempting in its youth for sure, but it will reward those with the nous to cellar for five years.

The 2020 Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot is a broad, enveloping wine, wafting from the glass with aromas of orange oil, apricot, freshly baked bread, green apple, pastry cream and petrol. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it's satiny and layered, with lively acids, terrific depth at the core and a long, sapid finish.

Serious and tensile, Raveneau's 2019 Chablis Grand Cru Clos unwinds in the glass with aromas of orange oil, white flowers, confit lemon, green apple and deftly judged reduction. Full-bodied, taut and chiseled, it's an immensely concentrated, racy wine with huge depth at the core and a long, intensely saline finish. Its style exemplifies the 2019 Chablis vintage at its best.

    Vinous (93-95)

Pale, green-tinged yellow. Mint, minerals, citrus fruits and a strong note of anise on the nose. Densely packed but at the same time racy, with terrific energy and cut to the flavors of lemon, lime and crushed stone. With its bracing, almost youthfully sharp finish, this really stimulates the taste buds.

The 2018 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur is brilliant, unwinding in the glass with notes of crisp green apple, white flowers, fresh bread, iodine and oyster shell. Full-bodied, satiny and concentrated, with chalky extract and tangy acids, it's one of the cooler, more tensile wines in the range and stands out as a particular highlight.
