    La Gaffeliere

Château La Gaffelière is a Saint-Émilion Premiers Grands Cru Classé (B). The estate is located west of Château Pavie, just south of the town of Saint-Émilion. The estate sits on the ruins of a Gallo-Roman villa named "Le Palat", and later a 17th-century leper colony. The word "gaffet" translates to leper. In the late 1800s the original extensive estate (much like others such as the Léoville estate) was divided into what became Château Canon-la-Gaffelière, and an estate first called Château Gaffelière-Naudes (“Naudes” was dropped in 1963). La Gaffelière has belonged to the Malet-Roquefort family for more than three centuries! The vineyard area extends to 22 hectares, with Merlot accounting for 80% (the remainder Cabernet Franc). Around 10,000 cases of the Grand Vin are produced, and the second wine is named Clos La Gaffelière.

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (85)

Medium red. Cherry, licorice, mint and a whiff of raw oak on the nose. Juicy and fairly intensely flavored, but with somewhat green flavors. Finishes with rather dry tannins. My sample of the 2000 was tart and underripe; it hard to believe that the sample was representative. The '99 was also green, and the tannins were astringent.

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (97)

The 2015 La Gaffelière is a wine of total finesse. Much less obvious and overt than most Saint-Émilions in this vintage, La Gaffelière makes its case on harmony and grace above all else. Bright, lifted Cabernet Franc–infused aromatics give the 2015 striking freshness and aromatic presence. The flavors are bright and nuanced to the core, with plenty of red cherry, espresso and floral notes. But back to the basics. In 2015 La Gaffelière is a wine that stands out because of its impeccable balance and sense of proportion. I loved it. Tasted two times.

The 2017 La Gaffeliere is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the nose is a little closed to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal fragrant scents of kirsch, black raspberries and warm plums plus suggestions of unsmoked cigars, rosehip tea and underbrush. Medium-bodied, the palate has fantastic elegance and sophistication, with tons of bright, perfumed fruit and exquisitely ripe tannins, finishing with bags of freshness and energy. Since the lower-lying sections of La Gaffeliere were affected by frost this year, this wine mainly comes from the section up on the Saint-Émilion plateau, near Ausone. Truly impressive!

The center-palate reflects excellent terroir, with blackberry, black-olive and walnut aromas and flavors. Tight center-palate with firm but creamy tannins and a flavorful, classy finish.
