    Henri Magnien

Run by Charles Magnien, who took over from his father immediately upon finishing school in 2009, this Gevrey-Chambertin domaine is a remarkable find, one that we are pleased to add to our line-up with the 2018 vintage. They have illustrious holdings across Gevrey-Chambertin, albeit in small parcels, but what they have they make count! This is a superb domaine where purity and elegance is key.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2018 Corton Les Grandes Lolières Grand Cru comes from 0.31 hectares on the Ladoix side; the vines are 65 years old. This is the only cuvée from Magnien that, in hindsight, might have been picked a little earlier; it’s just a little overpowering on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, saturated tannins, moderate acidity and a chalky-textured finish of black currant and cassis fruit. Quite stocky at the moment. It should be afforded 5–6 years in bottle.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru comes from 33-year-old vines adjacent to Evocelles. The nose takes more time to settle compared to the Champerrier, gradually evolving attractive briar and black currant aromas and sous-bois and mulch-like scents. The palate is medium-bodied and gently grippy on the entry. This is more structured than the Champerrier, with a little chewiness on the finish. Good potential, but it needs three to five years in bottle.

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru comes from 1.47 hectares that cover the four soil types within the vineyard; Magnien informed me that he is the only grower who has all four. The vines are Pinot Magnien and some are up to 100 years old. A gorgeous bouquet of pure black cherries, blueberry and light violet aromas bursts from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and lightly spiced, leading into a harmonious, persistent, mineral-driven finish. This should evolve into a gorgeous Les Cazetiers.

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Champerrier comes from 0.27 hectares of 60-year-old vines that has belonged to the Magnien family. It has a lovely bouquet of mainly black fruit and touches of camphor and rose petals. The palate is silky-smooth on the entry and displays fine acidity. Beautifully balanced, with a seamless, caressing finish that is as good as many a Premier Cru. Highly recommended.
