Henri Boillot

The Boillot family established themselves in the region in 1885, and Henri represents the fifth winemaking generation, with his son now overseeing the production of the reds.

The winery is located on the “other” side of the RN74 in an estate that includes the Damy cooperage. This impressive facility affords Henri far more space then if he were couched in some mediaeval maison in one of the villages, which is mandatory when you have such an all-embracing portfolio of wines.

Henri Boillot produces domaine and negociant wines from Burgandy’s most renowned growing areas. Henri is a 5th generation vigneron in the Cote d’Or. Wines of Maison Henri Boillot are produced in a cellar in Meursault and are vibrant and full of character.

Henri Boillot Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2012 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (91+)

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2012 tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru from Henri Boillot has quite a powerful bouquet with touches of dried honey and yellow flowers, though you have to swerve around noticeable reduction. The palate has decent weight, quite forward in the mouth with bitter lemon and dried orange peel notes. The finish is missing finesse and poise at first but it recovers to a degree if not quite fulfilling all its ambition. Give it a couple more years to find its groove.

Henri Boillot Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

The most youthfully reserved wine in the cellar was the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, a promising bottling that opens up to reveal scents of citrus zest, dried white flowers, green apple and pastry cream. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with racy acids and prodigious levels of searingly chalky dry extract that lend this wine incredible structure.

Purchased fruit from three parcels – one each from the villages of Ladoix-Serrigny, Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton. It is fermented and aged in 350L barrels, 20-50% new depending on the lot. The aromas begin with a distinct citrus note on the attack, but broaden on the palate with a nutty richness that is truly rewarding. The texture is luxurious, but the wine never loses its lovely freshness, which carries it through to a lingering finish.

Henri Boillot Montrachet Grand Cru 2017 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93-96)

The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru is among the most reserved wines in the cellar, unfurling in the glass with a reticent bouquet of crisp orchard fruit, white flowers and light reduction that wasn't revealing its full range when I tasted it. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and concentrated, with broad shoulders and evident power, concluding with a stony finish, but the full extent of its quality is hard to read.

Wine Advocate (95)

Boillot's emblematic 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère has turned out brilliantly, wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, hazelnut, dried white flowers, citrus oil, blanched almonds and smoke. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with terrific concentration, searing levels of extract and a long, mineral finish.

Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchere 2019 (6x75cl)

Decanter (95)

The Clos de la Mouchère is a domaine monopole of nearly 4ha. The vines date to before the Second World War and have not been replanted since. It is located midslope and consistently provides a lovely wine of exquisite balance and elegance. Here the accent is on ripe apple, spice and buttery aromas. The texture is broad and rich, but superbly elegant and well balanced. The finesse of the results in such a warm year are reassuring.

Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

Boillot's 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles reveals aromas of orange oil, white flowers and peaches, complemented by classy top notes of nutmeg and warm bread. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and vibrant, with quite a tensile, tight-knit core for this typically enveloping premier cru. But looking back through my notes, that often seems to be the case chez Boillot.

Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles 2019 (6x75cl)

Decanter (93)

Purchased fruit from a marvellous site, this comes from 60-year-old vines located next to the Leflaive holding. After a slow fermentation, the wine is aged just over one year in cask (60% new) to give a wine of impressive substance. Initially a bit restrained, it opens up on the palate to show plenty of substance and depth, with a texture that remains silky and luminously fresh, in spite of the extract and ripeness here.

Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 2019 (6x75cl)

Decanter (92)

Produced from 1.15ha of domaine-owned vines in the lieux-dits of Les Enseignères, Les Charmes and Les Houillères. The blend this year shows surprising depth of flavour, beginning with fresh citrus notes and an accent of flinty minerality on the initial attack. The maturation is evident in the spice notes that develop on the palate, but the wine never loses its elegance or balance, and there is enough substance to carry it through a pleasantly lingering finish.
