    Henri Boillot

The Boillot family established themselves in the region in 1885, and Henri represents the fifth winemaking generation, with his son now overseeing the production of the reds.

The winery is located on the “other” side of the RN74 in an estate that includes the Damy cooperage. This impressive facility affords Henri far more space then if he were couched in some mediaeval maison in one of the villages, which is mandatory when you have such an all-embracing portfolio of wines.

Henri Boillot produces domaine and negociant wines from Burgandy’s most renowned growing areas. Henri is a 5th generation vigneron in the Cote d’Or. Wines of Maison Henri Boillot are produced in a cellar in Meursault and are vibrant and full of character.

Mid lemon yellow. There is a slight reduction to the nose. All the weight appears on the palate with a gorgeously sensual deep white fruit, not heavy at all. White pepper. There is no sign of the reduction on the palate. An exceptional example with more tension at the back, great potential for the long term. Guillaume Boillot has dialled down to 50% new wood here and that is plenty. Tasted: 10/1/2021

Red-ruby. Knockout nose combines dark berries, violet, bacon fat, smoke and pepper; I was reminded of a t opnotch Cote-Rotie. Lush and sweet but not quite as complex as the Chambertin and Clos de Beze. This offers extraordinary finesse and smoothness for Bonnes-Mares, with perfectly integrated acidity framing the flavors without introducing any edges to the wine. Finishes extremely long and sweet, with a subtle element of smoked meat. Boillot is convinced that this wine will shut down in bottle owing to its tannic mass.

    Vinous (94-97)

(13.5% alcohol; 30% vendange entier): Dark red-ruby. Wild aromas and flavors of black raspberry, earthy spices and mocha, with an element of menthol freshness providing lift. Round, fat and highly concentrated; boasts outstanding richness and depth but will need extended aging to deliver on its inherent complexity. The crop level here was just 25 hectoliters per hectare, or less than the Chambertins. Most promising today on spicy, rising, edge-free finish, which saturates every square millimeter of the palate with salty minerality and dark fruits. This wonderfully silky, classy Bonnes-Mares is from stony, whiter soil on the Chambolle side of the cru.

    Vinous (93-96)

(vinified in two new barrels air-dried for 36 months): Good medium red, not as dark as the Clos de Bèze. Classical red-soil Bonnes-Mares perfume of raspberry, redcurrant, iron and brown spice. Offers a compelling combination of thickness, density and sucrosité, with its red fruit flavors complicated by clove, cinnamon and aromatic herbs and captivating saline minerality; there's a mineral-driven spiciness that reminds me of the Volnay Caillerets. This wonderfully energetic wine finishes with lovely subtle floral/spicy perfume and rising length, with piquant notes of blood orange and lemon contributing to an impression of weightlessness. A very sophisticated, refined Bonnes-Mares in the making.

Here too the nose is quite restrained with its admirably pure aromas of red cherry, dark currant, spice and earth along with notes of violet and lavender. I very much like the sense of underlying tension to the succulent, indeed even juicy, medium weight plus flavors that exude a subtle salinity on the tautly muscular and firm finish that flashes just a hint of youthful austerity. This isn't quite as complex as the Chambertin but it's close and it may well close the gap over time as this is also very clearly structured for mid to even longer-term keeping.

Bright medium ruby, a bit less saturated than the Clos de Beze. Great wild, soil-inflected nose combines black raspberry, licorice, minerals, crushed stone, leather, mocha, spices and game, all lifted by a pungent peppery nuance. The palate offers utterly compelling sappy sweetness, with outstanding energy to its extremely intense but primary flavors. Combines great power with an essentially gentle character. The impression of sappiness carries through to the saline, minerally, extremely long finish, which features suave, noble tannins. Boillot describes this wine as easier and greater than the Clos de Beze.

Boillot's 2015 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, which hails from the lieu-dit Grand Maupertui (neighboring Anne Gros' parcel), reveals a brooding bouquet of cassis, plum, musk and incense, framed by toasty new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and multidimensional, fresh and vibrant despite its considerable amplitude and power, with a fine-grained chassis of tannin and a long, sapid finish. This is a rich, lavish Clos Vougeot which should develop beautifully in the cellar.

A distinctly smoky nose combines notes of mineral-reduction with those of green apples, lavender and spice. The super-intense and well-muscled flavors seem to be built on a firm base of minerality before culminating in an explosively long finish. Note well that like the Montrachet, this presently taciturn effort is very clearly built-to-age and is going to require a minimum of 7 to 8 years of cellaring first and reward far longer.

Supple, silky and highly concentrated, offering extremely smooth flavors of stone fruits and flowers. An outstanding 2013 with a very long, pliant back end. From an enclave within the premier cru Perrières, Boillot's 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère is utterly superb this year, wafting from the glass with aromas of lemon oil, mandarin orange, beeswax, iodine and subtle smoky reduction. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, satiny and layered, with striking volume and depth at the core, balanced by incisive acids that animate the long, mineral finish. Guillaume Boillot speculates that this monopole's comparative variety of mesoclimates and soil types lends the resulting wine greater complexity than would be the case with a small cuvée.

Boillot describes this as the best wine of the cave in 2013.
