Fontaine-Gagnard
About Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard
Fontaine-Gagnard is the true Burgundian love affair. Its story began in the 1980s with the marriage of Richard Fontaine and Laurence Gagnard. Since 2007, Celine Fontaine has been taking more control of the winemaking from her father and the wines have been surging ahead over the past few years.
Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard has seen a stratospheric rise in quality and acclaim over the last decade, excelling in the outstanding 2014 and 2017 vintages. The wines have a fantastic purity and minerality allied to a lovely weight and richness of fruit. This is a very smart and stylish Domaine making some of the most sought-after wines from Chassagne-Montrachet, boasting a fantastic intensity of fruit that beautifully expresses their top-notch terroir.

Vinous (90-92)The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Clos Saint-Jean 1er Cru Rouge was cropped at 30hl/hl. With brambly red fruit, cranberry, raspberry, orange pith and a dab of white pepper, this is quite delightful. The palate is medium-bodied with black pepper filtering through the red fruit, attenuating slightly, though I admire the tension here. Very fine. |

Vinous (89)The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet La Boudriotte 1er Cru has an intense bouquet with a little alcoholic warmth. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly honeyed opening, lightly spiced with lower acidity than the other cuvées even though the alcohol is a reasonable 13.8 degrees. The frost has really concentrated this wine and it displays very good length, but it just misses a little terroir expression. |

Vinous (94)The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet La Boudriotte 1er Cru is very floral on the nose with pressed white flowers, honeysuckle and broom, touches of chalk and apricot. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, more density than the La Grande Montagne, impressive weight and salinity that gets the saliva flowing on the finish. Excellent. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet La Boudriotte 1er Cru has a little more vigour and energy on the nose compared to the Vergers or Morgeots. The palate is well balanced with lime and orange pith, edgier than other cuvées with orange rind and ginger arming the finish. I can see this maturing nicely in bottle. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Maltroye 1er Cru has a fresh, quite linear bouquet with crushed stone and light yellow flower aromas. It just needs a little more intensity. The palate is lightly spiced on the entry with modest weight, yet is cohesive with white pepper and ginger enlivening the finish. This is a delightful, pretty Chassagne-Montrachet. |

Vinous (90)The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Maltroye 1er Cru, raised in one-third new oak, has a well-defined bouquet with yellow plum, jasmine and light brioche aromas. It will require a couple of years to absorb the wood. The palate is well-balanced with a subtle walnut note on the entry, quite linear in style, with stem ginger veins towards the finish. Impressive length, this should give over a decade's worth of drinking pleasure. |

Vinous (93)The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a crisp, more understated bouquet with more earthy overtones that the domaine's other cuvées. The palate is one of the most terroir-expressive from the domaine, very well defined with a lightly spiced finish. This has a real spring in its step. |

Vinous (88-90)The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru just misses the mineralité expressed by other cuvées on the nose - a little one-dimensional by comparison. The palate is better with fine "bite" on the entry, moderate depth, perhaps just needing a little more precision on the finish. |

Vinous (92)The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru has a terroir-driven, minerally bouquet with crushed stone filtering through the orchard fruit and subtle hazelnut and litchi scents developing in the glass. The palate is well-balanced, perhaps just a little conservative/timid at the moment, precise yet bashful. Hints of rose water and peach skin towards the finish. One of the prettiest cuvées from Fontaine-Gagnard this year. |

Vinous (87-89)The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Village has a fresh bouquet, perhaps just lacking a little terroir expression, possibly because around 50% here was lost to frost. The palate is better with a sappy entry, a decent spine of acidity and lightly spiced towards the finish. I suspect the aromatics will open by the time of bottling. |

Burghound (88)All but invisible wood sits atop the peppery aromas of plum, red and dark currant along with violet hints. Wine Advocate (95)The 2012 Criots-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from the family’s one-third hectare holding planted between the 1930s and 1990s. It was picked the same day as the premier crus and Celine told me that it always has a slightly higher degree of alcohol. It has an entrancing bouquet with perfumed apricot, peach and dried citrus peel notes infused with minerals – feminine and seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with a rounded, powerful, spicy opening. It is very well balanced, very concentrated on the finish. This is compelling like so many from this under-rated grand cru vineyard, though there are just four barrels instead of the usual eight in this year. |
