    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-93)

Full red-ruby color. Cool, lively aromas of currant and tobacco. Lovely sweetness and volume in the mouth; suaver than the Beaumonts, with more flesh and perhaps lower acidity. Seamless and stylish, but with solid underlying backbone. Finishes with smooth tannins and excellent persistence. Showing well today.

    Vinous (89-92)

(the yield here was just 24 hectoliters per hectare, according to Rouget) Good full red. Pure, tangy, cool aromas of raspberry, licorice and spice. Sweet, pure and lively in the mouth; shows more flesh and much better extraction than the foregoing samples. Finishes with sweet tannins and very good length.

Good deep red-ruby. Complex aromas of red berry liqueur, minerals, coffee, cocoa and spices. Fat, dense and deep, with a captivating sweetness verging on confectionery. Finishes with superb length.

    Burghound (91-94)

A ripe, expressive and airy nose that combines both upper and mid-level register fruit notes that include red pinot, black berry and violet notes trimmed in moderate wood spice as well as natural spice notes of clove and anise that can also be found on the round, rich and beautifully balanced big-bodied flavors that are powerful, long and more stylish than usual. This is a terrific Ech that should be capable of at least a decade's worth of improvement.

A sweet, spicy profusion of cinnamon, ginger, cocoa powder, lily perfume, maraschino, and kirsch soars from the glass of Rouget 2006 Echezeaux, which comes to the palate with unexpected depth and richness of roasted meats, chalk, and saline savor, though to be sure, the bright red fruits and spices never flag. This is positively vibratory as well as riveting in its dynamic, oscillating finishing complexity. I'd give it 3-4 years head start and then plan to follow it for another decade.

    Vinous (92+)

Good full red. Deep, sappy aromas of kirsch, violet and minerals, with a medicinal cast. Sweet on entry, then taut and penetrating in the middle, with superb energy to the flavors of tangy, crunchy red fruits. At once dense and light on its feet, finishing with a saline nuance and lingering cherry flavor. This serious, structured wine really lifts the palate and stimulates the taste buds.

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a "big", quite ostentatious bouquet with dark cherries, crème de cassis, tinned prune and blueberries. It augurs for a top-heavy palate, though actually I find this better balanced than expected, certainly more so than the Les Beaumonts with veins of blood orange enlivening the quite persistent finish. This should age well in bottle although I would like to see more restraint on the nose.

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Village comes from Rouget’s four parcels in the north of the appellation. This has a pastille-like purity on the nose, dark cherries comingling with violet and light peony scents. The palate is well defined, quite structure, a little savory in style with black pepper on the structured finish. Afford this four or five years in bottle.

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Village comes across a bit muted on the nose at the moment, more tertiary in style compared to Rouget's other cuvées. The palate is medium-bodied and well-knit, quite fine tannins, not complex yet with a touch of sapidity on the finish.

The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Village had a bit too much VA on the nose for me and rather smudged the definition, the cassis and black cherry fruit. The palate was likewise a little too candied and rich, the Les Lavières that followed showing much more precision and terroir expression. A quasi-Syrah-like finish. I admit to being flummoxed by this cuvée from barrel.

    Vintage Tastings (93)

There was one more Burgundy on our agenda, a 2003 Rouget Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux. The Rouget had a deep, saucy, concentrated nose, again this grilled endive thing around a core of plum, cassis, soda and liqueur. It was a thick wine, and the second tasty 2003 Burg that I had had on this trip. It was really good, hedonistic and rich, long and concentrated, sweet and hearty, if anything a touch too sweet, but hey, that's 2003 (93).

    Wine Advocate (95-96)

Rouget alludes to the aromas of his 2006 Vosne-Romanee Cros Parantoux as tres particulaire, and you can say that again! Cassis, black raspberry, licorice, musk, toasted pistachio, ginger, and white pepper amaze the nose, followed by an implosive palate concentration that incorporates stony, chalky, and somehow ore-like mineral essences. The sense of sappy cling and invigorating, vibratory impingement of spice and mineral matter here left both my salivary and adrenal glands pumping. This fissionable vinous material should be cellared for at least half a dozen years and then vigilantly followed for at least a further decade.

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux 1er Cru, matured in seven new barrels, is beautifully-defined on the nose with precocious, penetrating dark cherry, raspberry and violet aromas that envelop the olfactory senses. The palate is harmonious and intense, silky-smooth in texture with better acidity and tension than some of Rouget's other cuvées. Layers of penetrating, sorbet-fresh red fruit are lavish yet very focused with a long and persistant peacock's tail finish. Wonderful. 14.5% alcohol according to Emmanuel Rouget.

The 2014 Vosne-Romanée Village was showing a little more wood on the nose compared to the Nuits Saint Georges Village, hints of dried blood infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is well balanced, a little grainy with dark berries (bilberry and boysenberry) suffused with sous-bois on the finish. Hopefully it will evolve more cohesion during the remainder of its élevage. There is substance here, but the component parts need to knit together.

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Village has a quintessential floral bouquet with pressed violet infusing the red fruit, veins of blood orange emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with palpable energy. Taut and fresh, this is a Vosne-Romanée Village that displays wonderful focus and might be my pick of Rouget’s wines if price is factored in. Recommended.
