Drouhin-Laroze
About Domaine Drouhin-Laroze
Based in Gevrey-Chambertin, Drouhin-Laroze owns an impressive range of Grand Cru across the Cote d’Or. Philippe Drouhin is helped by his daughter Caroline reducing the oak to focus on the excellent fruit they have at their fingertips. The style of Drouhin-Laroze sits between the modern and traditional style; the extraction and use of oak are moderate here.

Wine Advocate (90-92)The 2014 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru includes around 35% whole bunch fruit and around 60% new oak. It has an open, quite transparent bouquet with mineral-tinged black fruit, a hint of Seville orange marmalade lurking in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin that lends this Bonnes-Mares good backbone and a little more masculinity than previous vintages. I like the density here, but it just needs to flow a little more towards the strict, linear finish. |

Vinous (92+)Bright medium red. Strong oak tones partly mask aromas of red berries, rose petal and medicinal menthol. At once dense and taut, with savory, firm-edged flavors of cranberry, minerals and white pepper giving the middle palate an incisive character. Not a fleshy wine--in fact a bit youthfully compressed today--but finishes perfumed, focused and long, with pepper and saline mineral notes displaying a slightly tart edge. |

Wine Advocate (89-91)The 2014 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a noticeable dark colour. There is plenty of dark cherry and black plum fruit on the nose, quite fresh with violet scents developing with aeration, though not a complex bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with quite fine tannin and well judged acidity. It is a linear Chapelle-Chambertin, a correct grand cru with a straightlaced finish that needs just a little more persistence. |

Vinous (89)Medium red. Pungent perfume of red cherry, raspberry, spicy oak and leather. A juicy, slightly tart midweight with a hint of leathery rusticity but also decent suppleness to its red berry and game flavors. Finishes with dusty tannins and firm-edged cranberry and pomegranate notes. Just a touch herbal in the style of this cooler year but with no shortage of texture. |

Vinous (91+)Good full medium red. Musky dark raspberry, strawberry, underbrush and crushed rock on the nose, plus hints of pepper, leather and spicy oak. Dense, juicy and penetrating but not at all hard, with strong smoky limestone minerality carrying through to a very long, saline aftertaste featuring serious ripe tannins that turned a bit edgy with air. The wine's saline element is nicely supported by its wild red berry fruit. |
