Faiveley
The historic Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy's leading domaines. There is no doubt that in the last decade, under the guidance of Erwan Faiveley and winemaker Jérôme Flous, they have undergone a renaissance of style, shedding their old-school, austere reds for elegant, beautifully finessed wines.
Domaine Faiveley owns holdings in many of Burgundy’s most revered vineyards in the Côte de Nuits (Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Latricières-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot, etc.) and in the Côte de Beaune (Corton-Charlemagne, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, Volnay, Pommard, etc.) with some of these being monopoles under single ownership.
Although armed with an incredible variety of vineyards, Faiveley also have their extraordinary heritage and experience as an advantage over their local rivals. No less than seven generations of Faiveleys have succeeded each other in running the domaine since it was founded in 1825.

Vinous (94)Impressively youthful saturated dark red color. Deep, brooding aromas of black fruits, violet, licorice and tobacco reminded me of Bordeaux, if not Pauillac. Hugely rich, tactile and mouthfilling, with its fleshy black cherry and violet flavors conveying a strong impression of inky depth without coming across as heavy. A classically dry, medicinal grand cru in a distinctly masculine style, this has the stuffing and structure to last 50 years. Spreads out horizontally on the back end, finishing with building ripe, dusty tannins and palate-staining length. Not the last word in finesse but this is an uncanny powerhouse of a Burgundy. Fans of the style may rate it even higher than I do. (13.2% alcohol; 3.33 pH; 3.6 g/l acidity) |

Vinous (88)(the only one of these 2010s that was in bottle by the time of my tasting): Good bright red. Deep aromas and flavors of black cherry, raspberry, menthol and licorice. Richer and larger-scaled than the Framboisiere, showing more depth and structure. Finishes with good length. This vineyard is actually located beneath Framboisiere but its soil is redder and richer in clay content. |

Vinous (89)The 2021 Mercurey Framboisière has a pretty, airy, redcurrant and raspberry-scented bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red fruit, orange rind and a touch of allspice. Good, solid, fresh finish, rustic in a good way. |
