    La Pousse d'Or

    Domaine de la Pousse d’Or has an imposing property near Volnay, in the Cote de Beaune. They also have vines in Pommard and Santenay. Since its foundation in 1964 it has been a pioneering estate. In 1997 it was acquired by Patrick Landanger who invested heavily in this spirit, getting the best of his terroir.

Unusually, this appears to be just a bit less structured than the Bressandes and should also be approachable on the younger side if that's your preference.

    The 2014 Chambolle Musigny les Charmes 1er Cru has one of the most exotic bouquets from La Pousse d'Or: macerated red cherries, orange peel and dried fig, nicely defined and just a little heady! The palate is succulent on the entry with supple, fine tannin. Here, there is a mixture of red and black fruit, whereas other cuvées lean towards the latter. It feels more harmonious in the mouth, perhaps more approachable with a persuasive, silky texture on the finish. This is very well crafted.

It is very Clos de la Roche, to put it prosaically. The palate is very harmonious, silky smooth and elegant. There is fine weight in the mouth, though this is more about tension and elegance, with a gorgeous, sensual, satin-like touch to the finish. This could become one of the best wines from this vineyard.

The oak here is evident but nicely proportioned against the fruit. This is very promising and ranks highly against its peers. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

    The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets, which is made from whole bunch fruit, has a clean and fresh, very pure bouquet that neatly disguises the stem addition. The palate is grippy, very tannic, masculine with a grainy texture, hints of bell pepper towards the huge finish that needs more flesh to balance those stems. Still, it is balanced and I am intrigued to see how this will age - this has complexity and a sense of intrigue.
