Château Clinet
About Château Clinet
One of the most celebrated estates in Pomerol, Château Clinet is also known to be one of the oldest, with vines reportedly planted as early as 1785. The estate remained in the hands of the Constant family before being taken over by the Arnaud family, who also happens to own the legendary Pétrus! Despite the association with Pétrus, it wasn’t exactly a bed of roses on the get-go for Château Clinet, whose wines were initially lacklustre right until the 1970s when Jean-Michel Arcaute came on board.
Viniculture
With support from oenologist Michel Rolland, Jean-Michel decisively replaced most of the Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and raised the bar in production standards by re-introducing hand-harvesting, manual selection of berries and longer cuvaison. The fruits of his labour came in the form of a perfect score for the 1989 vintage, which catapulted Château Clinet into its meteoric ascent till today.
Château Clinet’s vineyards are the highest in Pomerol. It is also one of the oldest estates in Pomerol, with records showing vines planted in 1785. In C18th Clinet and Pétrus were under the same ownership. Jean-Louis Laborde bought the estate in 1998. His son Ronan, could have been a marathon runner, instead, he took over management in 2004 and made his life’s work the return of Clinet to its previous position as one of the very top wines of Pomerol.
The Clinet vineyard is tiny, with just 10ha of Merlot (88%) and Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Clinet is situated on great terroir on the Pomerol Plateau. Their closest neighbours are L’Eglise Clinet, Clos L’Eglise, Feytit-Clinet and Trotanoy. They also have vines sitting on more gravel close to Lafleur and Pétrus. The wines of Clinet are rich, supple, sensuous, powerful and in the best vintages, often showing floral, chocolate and spicy flavours. The wine ages well, developing sensuous textures and aromatic complexities.

Wine Spectator (93)Big and powerful, with lots of olive, brown sugar and jam. Soft and full, with round tannins. A voluptuous and wild wine. Juicy and exotic. Why wait on this full-throttle red? 100 percent Merlot.¿'88/'98 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2008). Drink now. -JS |

Wine Advocate (96)The opaque ruby/purple 2005 Clinet offers incredibly fragrant aromatics, an opaque ruby/purple color, and a wonderfully sweet nose of flowers, blackberries, licorice, truffle and caramel. Full-bodied, powerful and rich, it is not as nuanced or complex as the top four or five Pomerols, but close. This is a broad, meaty, masculine, super-rich and concentrated wine, with lavish plum, blackcurrants and blackberries. Drink it five years from now, and over the following 30 or more years. |

Wine Advocate (94+)Another resounding success for the vintage, the opaque purple-colored 2008 Clinet (14.4% alcohol) is composed of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Yields of 38 hectoliters per hectare, while higher than in 2010, were still modest. Another powerful, big, large-scaled effort, the 2008 exhibits an inky/purple color as well as sweet creme de cassis, blackberry, plum, Asian spice, licorice and incense notes. Layered and full-bodied with stunning purity and a 40+ second finish, this beauty needs 3-5 years of bottle age and should keep for 25-30 years. |

Jeb Dunnuck (99)Tasted on four separate occasions, the 2016 Château Clinet is another brilliant wine from this estate. Showing slightly more freshness and purity than the 2015, its saturated purple color is followed by a thrilling array of crème de cassis, graphite, ground herbs, and a terrific sense of minerality. Deep, full-bodied, with building tannins, and a magical sense of purity and elegance paired with real density and depth, it needs short term cellaring and will keep for three decades. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (98)The 2019 Clinet has maintained the stunning delineation that I discerned from the barrel sample. Pure black cherries, hints of cassis and wilted violet scents unfold in the glass with effortless ease, and the oak (75% new, 25% used for 18 months) is neatly integrated. The poised palate is medium-bodied, taut and fresh, with fine-grained tannins and disarming mineralité, particularly toward the finish, which delivers tremendous length and saliva-inducing salinity on the aftertaste. There is a pleasing strictness to this Clinet that is apposite to the flamboyant and decadent wines of the Nineties. This Clinet is one of Ronan Laborde's great achievements. |
