Château Canon-la-Gaffelière
About Château Canon-la-Gaffelière
Château Canon-La-Gaffelière now sits proudly as a Saint Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) estate. Count Joseph Hubert von Neipperg purchased Canon-La-Gaffelière in 1971, and the von Neipperg family remain the owners today. Currently, Stephan von Neipperg manages Canon-La-Gaffelière as well as several other Saint Émilion estates owned by the family. Château Ausone is visible from certain points on the property. The vineyards are farmed using 100% organic methods. The small 19.5ha vineyard is planted with 52% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. The old vines average close to 50 years of age. They also have much older vines which are close to 80 years old. Although this Saint Émilion estate is situated close to many great names in the appellation, before Stephan Von Neipperg took over in 1983, it was never considered in the same league. This is no longer the case, and Canon-La-Gaffelière sits only just below the four Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) properties today (Ausone, Cheval Blanc, Angélus and Pavie).Product Name | Region | Qty | Score | Price | |||||

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90)Good medium ruby. Aromas of plum, currant, game and leather. Silky-sweet and aromatic in the mouth, with lovely vinosity to frame the expressive flavors of roasted plum, currant, black cherry, minerals and dark chocolate. Firmly structured but quite suave, with fine tannins and very good length. Impressive for the vintage. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (95+)One of the wines of the vintage, the 2014 Canon La Gaffelière is explosive, lifted and aristocratic in its breeding. Bright Cabernet Franc aromatics give the wine its signature lift and precision. Raspberry jam, rose petal, mint, blood orange, tobacco and pomegranate build slowly on the palate, leading to a super-expressive, finely knit finish. Powerful yet also impeccably refined, the 2014 has it all. The 2014 is 55 % Merlot, 37 % Cabernet Franc and 8 % Cabernet Sauvignon. Don't miss it. Tasted two times. |

Wine Advocate (97)Composed of 55% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Franc and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in French oak, 55% new, for 17 months, the 2015 Canon la Gaffeliere features a deep garnet-purple color and a cedar-laced nose to begin, giving way to fragrant underlying scents of roses and violets with a core of crushed black currants, blackberries and Bing cherries plus hints of fallen leaves and dusty earth. Medium to full-bodied, the seductively perfumed red and black fruit fills the mouth, framed with plush tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing very long and minerally. |

The Wine Independent (98)The 2016 Canon la Gaffeliere has a deep garnet color. It bursts on the scene with exuberant notes of juicy blackberries, plum preserves, and fruit cake, plus suggestions of clove oil, mocha, and Indian spices. The full-bodied palate is full-on rich and decadent, featuring velvety tannins and just enough freshness to match the concentrated black fruit and spicy layers, finishing with epic length. |

Jeb Dunnuck (97)The 2019 Château Canon-La-Gaffelière is another brilliantly perfumed wine in the vintage that shines for its complexity, finesse, and nuances. Giving up awesome notes of red and black currants, tobacco, exotic flowers, cedarwood, and loamy earth, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, beautifully polished, integrated tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. This is serious juice that warrants at least 4-5 years of bottle age and will evolve for 30 to 40 years. |
