I seldom taste the regional appellations on my visits to the Domaine Dugat-Py, so when I saw the 2015 Bourgogne Cuvée Halinard on a Côte d'Or wine list, I made a point of ordering it. This is a lovely wine, wafting from the glass with a classy bouquet of red cherries, cassis, grilled meat and rich soil, subtly framed by a judicious touch of recently used oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a deep core of ripe but savory fruit, fine-grained structuring tannins and a long, sapid finish, with juicy balancing acids. The substance that is this domaine's calling card is certainly present, and it will undoubtedly improve with five to ten years of bottle age—at maturity, I suspect it will embarrass many village wines. Interestingly, it's both a touch more savory and a touch more structured than the lovely 2015 Bourgogne Rouge from Domaine Claude Dugat that I tasted a few days before.

The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux is laced with tobacco, earthiness, smoke and dark red fruit. The Champeaux is intense and a bit sauvage, with tons of personality. There is nothing subtle here. A virile, imposing wine, the Champeaux is endowed with considerable power and structure, both of which suggest it will need time to fully come together.

    Vinous (90-92)

(these vines range in age from 50 to 105 years, according to Dugat; made with 60% whole clusters and aged in 50% new oak): Initially reticent aromas of boysenberry, violet, licorice and espresso show subtle complexity and a stronger torrefaction quality with aeration. Plush in texture but less expressive and harmonious today than the Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes. The purple fruit and licorice flavors are nicely lifted by herbal and spicy nuances from the stems, which contribute elegance and lift. Very easily digestible and not at all hard, but the building tannins will nonetheless require some patience. (Incidentally, Dugat was not ready to present his Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles Vieilles Vignes, as the wine finished its malo very late and had just been racked.)

    Vinous (91-93)

Assembled from several parcels of 80- to 100-year-old vines, the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin "Cuvée Coeur de Roy" has an elegant, seductive bouquet of pure raspberry and wild strawberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe sappy red fruit, good structure and very well-integrated new oak toward the finish. This has good potential.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles 1er Cru has an intense black cherry and raspberry coulis scented bouquet, plenty of concentration here, unsurprising since the old vines yielded around 25hl/ha. The palate is well balanced. The 50% whole bunches are neatly integrated, with slightly chewy tannin and a citrus, quite focused orange rind-tinged finish.

    Burghound (89-91)

A top note of herbal tea sits atop the pretty aromas of dark berry, floral and a whiff of humus that is very Gevrey in character. The sleek, intense and well-detailed middle weight flavors are not as dense as they usually are but they possess lovely depth and persistence on the somewhat austere bitter cherry pit-inflected finish.
