Best known for their high-flying Grange, St. Henri and others, Penfolds has managed to carve out a niche within its stable for some truly thrilling, excellent value wines.
Chief among them, the Bin 311 Chardonnay, made of fruit sourced from Tumbarumba, Tasmania and the Adelaide Hills is one of the best buys of the 2019 releases from Penfolds. This 2018 is a superb effort, which James Suckling calls "the finest Bin 311 to date".
The first vintage of 311 as released in 2005 and the concept behind it is to take full advantage of Penfolds' unrivalled sourcing power. Not everything can go into the Yattarna and Bin A, but Penfolds have the uncanny ability to acquire an embarrassment of riches when it comes to top-quality Chardonnay. Therefore it comes as no surprise that the need arose for another label.
As a result this is a third feather in their white wine cap and with 95 points from Suckling it more than holds its own. Add to that a distinct edge in the value race; at just $160 IB per case it's a world-class bargain considering its pedigree.
"Refined and very striking style with a wealth of lemons, white peaches and nectarines," this captures the essence of top quality Chardonnay and will mature well for the next five years.
