The 2021 Volnay Clos de la Barre 1er Cru is well-defined on the nose with raspberry, cranberry and red plum. It's more withdrawn than the Santenots by comparison. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe dark berry fruit laced with white pepper and bay leaf. With impressive focus on the finish, this fans out nicely and suggests that it will age as well as the Santenots. Excellent.

Pale garnet. Friendly and sweet on palate entry with good structure. Dry finish. It’s all there to enjoy. Though it will never be a blockbuster … thank goodness! Decent length.

Medium deep crimson. Perfumed ripe cherry on the nose. There is an extra wealth of fruit, lifted raspberry, with riper tannins behind. Fine persistence, this one goes all the way. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2022
