Argiano Brunello di Montalcino 2018 (6x75cl) Kerin O'Keefe (97)Camphor, forest berry, dark spice and new leather aromas form the enticing nose. Elegantly structured and radiant, the linear, vibrant palate delivers ripe red cherry, pomegranate, ground clove and peppercorn set against a backbone of bright acidity and taut, fine-grained tannins. What a beauty.

Argiano Solengo 2020 (6x75cl) James Suckling (96)Profound nose here with chili chocolate and sandalwood beneath the sweet blackberry background. A hint of violets, too. An opulent and densely packed palate with full body and concentrated blackberries. Very tight tannins rendered in a fine-grained and almost seamless way, with a lingering finish. Drinkable now if decanted, but better after 2025.

Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2020 (6x75cl) Tim Atkin MW (97)The 2020 Syrah is a 90/10 cuvée of grapes from the Porseleinberg and Goldmine properties and is another triumphant release from Marc Kent and Gottfried Mocke. Far from being a blockbuster, this is a subtle, layered wine, with aromas of violet and five-spice, subtle 60% whole bunches and flavours of bramble, blackberry and goji berry. Silky, scented and deftly oaked.

2019 |
Brezza Barolo 2019 (6x75cl) Vinous (92)The 2019 Barolo is a gorgeous entry-level offering from Brezza. In fact, it's one of the best editions of this wine I can remember tasting. Bright, translucent and full of character, the straight Barolo is all charm. Crushed red berry fruit, orange peel, sage, mint and sweet spice all lend notable complexity throughout. Vineyard sites are San Lorenzo, Fossati, Ravera (Novello) and Bricco San Pietro. Fruit is harvested and vinified separately, then the lots are blended before malolactic fermentation.

Brezza Barolo Cannubi 2019 (6x75cl) Vinous (95)The 2019 Barolo Cannubi is one of the best wines I have tasted from Brezza in a very long time. Sweet, perfumed and silky, the 2019 bristles with Cannubi character. Crushed red berry fruit, cedar, mint, rose petal and orange zest are some of the notes that grace this exquisite but potent Barolo. Give the tannins a few years to soften.

Brezza Barolo Castellero 2019 (6x75cl) Vinous (94)The 2019 Barolo Castellero is a deep, beguiling wine. Deeply pitched spice, menthol, licorice and dried herbs meld into a core of dark-toned fruit. Virile and imposing, with notable inner sweetness, the Castellero is stunning. There's a bit of new oak influence, but it is not dominant. This is another superb Barolo from Brezza.

Brezza Barolo Sarmassa 2019 (6x75cl) Decanter (97)Brezza is dedicated to organic viticulture, and works only with indigenous yeast, big oak vessels and long macerations in the cellar. His 2019 Sarmassa is one of the most elegant Barolos of the vintage, if not the most. Bright ruby in the glass and vibrant on the nose, the tannins are impeccable. Plenty of Parma violet notes are to the fore, soaked with rhubarb root, liquorice stick and a whiff of yellow fruits. The attack is poised, soft and silky, with long, lifted acidity. There is a perfect extraction here – the tannins are very well judged and ripe.

Dominio del Aguila Ribera del Duero Reserva 2019 (6x75cl)

|
2019 |
Dominio del Aguila Ribera del Duero Reserva 2019 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (96)2019 was a warm and dry low-yielding year, somewhat similar to 2015, and the 2019 Reserva could be the modern version of the 2015—a round, lush and approachable Reserva that is perfumed and fruit-driven, with spices in the background. It's a hedonist cuvée of 95% Tempranillo and 5% other grapes from some of the oldest grapes in the village. It fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts followed by a slow malolactic in 228-liter French oak barrels, mostly used, where the wine matured for 35 months. It reveals very good integration of the oak that is neatly folded into the wine. It shows the tannic structure of the 2019 vintage. 23,875 bottles and 430 magnums produced. It was bottled in September 2022.

2x75cl Sine Fine - 98 points | Jeb Dunnuck
98 points | Jeb Dunnuck (Perihelios)
Coming from Thomas Rivers Brown, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Perihelios offers a more sun-kissed, sexy style in its ripe blue fruits, violets, orange blossom, bouquet garni, tobacco, and chocolate-like nuances. One of the more round, up-front, and incredibly sexy wines in the lineup, it's full-bodied and has brilliant tannins, no shortage of mid-palate depth, and a finish that won't quit. Drink this thrill ride of a wine any time over the coming two decades or more. Tasted twice with consistent notes.
97+ points | Jeb Dunnuck (Polysipine)
Made by Philippe Melka, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Polyspline (blended with 4% Petit Verdot) is an inky black-hued, massive beast of a wine revealing loads of chocolaty black fruits, camphor, smoked tobacco, and spicy oak-like aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied, powerful wine with building tannins, lots of mid-palate depth, terrific overall balance, and one heck of a great finish. It's not for those seeking instant gratification, but it's one seriously good bottle of wine. Hide bottles for 5-7 years and it should have 2-3 decades of prime drinking.
98 points | Jeb Dunnuck (Sine Fine)
As with the 2018, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Sine Fine is made by Benoit Touquette and has a slightly darker, powerful style while still certainly playing in the sexy, opulent end of the pool. Blueberries, chocolate, flowers, espresso, and classy oak all define the nose, and it's a full-bodied, concentrated wine on the palate, with ripe tannins, a great mid-palate, and terrific overall balance. This floral, blue-fruited, seamless beauty offers loads of pleasure today yet will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age to integrate its oak and evolve for at least two decades. It's another brilliant wine in the lineup.

2021 |
Giant Steps Primavera Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021 (6x75cl) Halliday Wine Companion (97)From the Primavera vineyard at Woori Yallock, planted in 2001 on the same red soil as Wombat Creek. Both destemmed (55%) and whole-bunch components. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. A very bright crimson purple. So pure and perfumed with briary cherries, ripe redcurrants and freshly cut roses. Poised, juicy and energetic, the wine has so much tang and crunch, you barely notice that this is also structured finishing with long, gently puckering tannins. A wine with immediate appeal, but also one that will reward at least another 7-10 years in the cellar.

2018 |
Giodo Brunello di Montalcino 2018 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (97)This wine was tasted in a preview capacity as it won't hit the market until the beginning of next year. Tasted at the Giodo winery in one of the most remote and beautiful spots in the appellation surrounded by forests and wide open panoramas, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino gives us a promising taste of what we can expect from this warm vintage. The wine delivers ripe, but delicate aromas of cassis and dark cherry with shades of lilac, violet and crushed limestone. The tannins are present and well managed. Carlo Ferrini's Brunello promises a long aging trajectory.

2018 |
Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 2018 (6x75cl) Vinous (96+)Impressing from the first tilt of the glass, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino makes itself known, with a heady burst of exotic spice and crushed ashen stone giving way to dried black cherries and grilled herbs. This combines the energy of the vintage with the dark balsamic-tinged fruits of Montalcino’s southern reaches, as zesty acidity maintains balance throughout, and flinty minerals saturate toward the close. It finishes long, savory and structured, yet its tannins are more rounded than anticipated, creating both a classic feel, but also leaving a mouthwatering sensation that tricks the taster back to the glass for more. Easily one of the top wines of the vintage, the 2018 is not to be missed.

2020 |
Il Poggione Rosso di Montalcino 2020 (6x75cl) Vinous (92)The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino is dark and youthfully inward, as nuances of black currant and licorice are offset by crushed ashen stone. It’s silky and enveloping, yet with a saline-core of minerality and bright acids that create a more tactile feel, as a saturation of tart red berries form toward the close. This tapers off long and lightly structured, yet still quite fresh, begging for a short stay in the cellar before revealing all of its charms. Wow. The 2020 from Il Poggione mixes the warmth of the vintage with the house style to create a truly captivating Rosso.

Jean Chauvenet Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains 2021 (6x75cl) Burghound (91-93)Ripe yet cool aromas include those of cassis, poached plum, an array of spice elements plus a whiff of the sauvage. The very rich and even bigger and more voluminous large-scaled flavors also brim with sappy dry extract before culminating in a balanced, powerful and lingering finish where a touch of bitter chocolate slowly emerges. This isn’t massive in the way that it usually is though it is borderline opulent, which is a descriptor I use very rarely with respect to the 2021 reds.

Jean Fournier Marsannay Les Es Chezots 2021 (6x75cl) Vinous (91-93)The 2021 Marsannay Es Chezots has a lively, vibrant bouquet with pure Dorset plum and bilberry scents, light iris petal aromas. Very detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, quite chalky in texture, perhaps a little compact but I feel this has something up its sleeve for later.
