John Duval is a master blender. This is all about the best of the vintage, fruit from various sites across the and Eden Barossa Valleys, to morph into the mighty Eligo. A powerhouse of flavour yet never loses focus. Dark plums infused with star anise, cinnamon, Dutch licorice and soy sauce. Full-bodied with velvety rich tannins. It gets the most oak - French hogsheads 54% new, aged 18 months, and needs time to settle in. It will.

This 2017 Eligo Shiraz smells like it's going to be monstrously huge—the nose is charry, spicy and dense. However, in the mouth, there is a bright, vibrant lightness to the core of red fruit. It's spectacular. There is black cherry, raspberry pip, damson, red apple skins and salted licorice. I always think it a great thing when sweet fruit is tempered by either salty/savory spice or a hint of hung deli meat. It's the yin to the yang, and it's here. Very good. Drink it now through to 2037.

Saturated ruby. Ripe, spice-accented blackberry, cherry, mocha and woodsmoke on the highly scented nose. Fleshy and expansive in the mouth, offering concentrated red and black fruit preserve flavors that show appealing sweetness and subtle cola and vanilla notes. Becomes more energetic with air and finishes on a sappy cassis note, with solid thrust, mounting tannins and impressive persistence.
