White
Italy is home to a treasure trove of exceptional white wines, each showcasing the country's diverse terroir and winemaking traditions. From the cool Alpine regions of Alto Adige to the sunny coast of Sicily, Italy offers a captivating range of fine white wines that delight the senses and capture the essence of their respective regions.
In the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, renowned vineyards like Livio Felluga, Jermann, and Terlato produce exceptional white wines that are highly regarded for their quality and elegance. These wines, crafted from indigenous grape varieties such as Friulano, Pinot Grigio, and Ribolla Gialla, showcase crisp acidity, vibrant fruit flavors, and a unique minerality.
Tuscany, known for its red wines, also produces remarkable white wines. The vineyards of Antinori, Castello Banfi, and Isole e Olena are celebrated for their Tuscan white wines, which offer a delightful alternative to the region's reds. Wines like Vermentino and Vernaccia di San Gimignano exemplify the Tuscan terroir, with their refreshing acidity, citrusy notes, and an underlying richness.
In the Veneto region, Soave and Garganega are the stars of the show. Wineries like Pieropan, Suavia, and Inama craft exceptional white wines that showcase the elegance and aromatic complexity of the Garganega grape. These wines feature flavors of ripe stone fruits, floral nuances, and a vibrant acidity that make them highly versatile and food-friendly.
Moving south to Sicily, vineyards like Planeta and Donnafugata produce captivating white wines that reflect the island's unique terroir. Wines made from native grape varieties such as Grillo and Carricante exhibit a lively acidity, tropical fruit aromas, and a distinct mineral character that sets them apart.
From north to south, Italy's fine white wines offer an incredible range of flavors, styles, and terroir expressions. Whether you're sipping a crisp Friulano, a complex Tuscan white, an aromatic Venetian white, or an elegant Sicilian white, Italian white wines transport you to the sun-soaked vineyards and capture the essence of Italy's winemaking heritage.

James Suckling (96)Dried apple, lemon, lime and lemon curd on the nose with hints of cedar. Medium-to full-bodied with a solid core of fruit and a fresh, vivid finish. Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (98)Enticing waves of perfectly judged gunsmoke reduction on the first nose, dancing across the palate and hinting at minerality rather than closing things down. Fragrant, joyous, chiselled citrus, lime, chamomile and lemongrass, with a slate scrape texture giving grip, depth and persistency. I've said it before, but I put this right up there with my favourite dry white wines, alongside Pavillon Blanc, Remelluri Bianco and Penfold Yattarna. This is winemaker Axel Heinz working his magic. Love it. |

Wine Advocate (94)This wine that once featured Viognier in the blend, is now 100% Sauvignon Blanc. The 2020 Ornellaia Bianco is quite tropical and generous in personality with immediate aromas of papaya, Golden Delicious apple and crushed stone. The wine is beautifully textured and long lasting. I asked if Vermentino might ever feature in this blend (to bring in a Tuscan grape), but the answer is no for now. Vermentino already plays a role in the estate’s very popular entry-level Poggio alle Gazze dell’Ornellaia. Viognier is being cut because the grape is difficult, and if you don’t hit the harvest date just right, it can appear flabby and waxy. |

Matthew Jukes (18.5)One always has to wait a while for this wine to find its way onto the market after the initial flurry of wine broker activity, but I hope it will do so soon because this is one of the most sophisticated PaGs I have ever tasted. In fact, it is drinking rather nicely already with none the theatricality of bygone vintages nor any of the ponderous, demanding characteristics of some of the heavier, food-craving wines of the past. This is a civilised, hauntingly graceful and amazingly complex wine, which allows each of its component grape varieties the time and space to greet the drinker. This welcome restraint brings a new level of allure to Poggio alle Gazze, making it a must-buy for fans of Italian white wines. I cannot think of another vintage of this wine that will please many diverse palates with its finely balanced flavours. |

Vinous (96)The 2020 Terlaner Grande Cuvée Primo entrances with a delicate mix of dusty stone, freshly spiced pear, white flowers and crushed raw almonds. This is elegance personified, silky yet buoyant. Enriching hints of hazelnut custard enhance the notes of young peach as a staining of minerality amasses toward the close. The Primo finishes dramatically long yet youthfully tense, leaving a saturation of primary fruit to resonate beneath a flourish of citrus-tinged florals. The word “wow” does not do this justice. The 2020 is just a baby today. Is it Grande Cuvée or Grand Cru? Either way, it’s fantastic. |

Crafting a true masterpiece, the Venissa Bianco 2015 hails from the Venetian lagoon's storied vineyards on the island of Mazzorbo. The Venissa Bianco 2015 captivates with its rarity and exclusivity, being crafted entirely of the ancient and near-extinct Dorona grape, with only 4000 bottles produced. Employing traditional winemaking techniques, this wine rested for two years in ancient clay amphorae and cement tanks before meeting the world. Expressing a golden hue, this wine dazzles your senses with complex aromas of honey, nuts, and tropical fruits, balanced beautifully by a savoury minerality. The palate is rich and seductive, drawn out in a long, thought-provoking finish. An enchanting exemplification of Venissian mastery, the Venissa Bianco 2015 pairs perfectly with fine Mediterranean cuisine, while offering vibrant cellaring potential.
