Saturated full ruby. Brooding, primary aromas of berries, black cherry and licorice. Dense, lush and seamless, with nicely integrated acidity giving shape to the youthfully medicinal dark berry, black cherry and mint flavors. Rather backward today and not yet showing its complexity, but likely to reward eight or ten years of cellaring. Finishes firmly tannic, supple and long.

The 1999 Barolo Cannubi is a big, big wine. Cloves, cinnamon, dried cherries and dried flowers all jump from the glass. The 1999 is a decidedly large-scaled, powerful Barolo indelibly shaped by the 100% new French oak barrels that Chiara Boschis used at the time. The 1999 is also still a bit youthful, but unlike so many wines made in the same style, it has aged evenly and gracefully. I wouldn’t wait too long however, as tertiary aromas are right around the corner and at some point the fruit will start dropping out.

Marchesi di Grésy's 1999 Barbaresco Camp Gros is now close to fully mature. Despite its big, broad-shouldered frame, the Camp Gros is the most forward of the three 1999s, which is a bit out of character for a wine that ususally is the last to unwind in this range. Hints of sweet tobacco, menthol, black cherries, plums and rosemary add the final notes of complexity. Any remaining bottles need to be finished off over the next 2-3 years.

Well, there is a lot of competition in this flight. The 1999 Masseto is another epic wine. Swaths of tannin give the 1999 a real sense of energy to match its decidedly virile, inward personality. Dark and brooding, the 1999 doesn’t quite have the volume of the 2001, the power of the 2006 nor the finesse of years like 2004, but it is nevertheless superb in a slightly burlier style than those wines.
