Time has gently softened the 1996 tannins, rendering the 1996 super-expressive today. The 1996 is still firm and quite powerful, but not as austere as many wines are in this vintage. Tar, licorice and scorched earth add the closing shades of nuance in an impeccably balanced, vivid Barolo that captures the personality of the vintage at its best. |

Vinous (99)It’s almost impossible to imagine that the 1985 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva La Storica has just celebrated its thirty-sixth birthday. It displays a brilliant ruby red color and amazing clarity in the glass, with only the slightest bricking around the rim. The bouquet alone is enough to keep you at the edge of your seat, as if opening a cedar treasure box to find dusty rose and sour cherry offset by spiced orange, crushed dried sage and just the slightest hint of animal musk. This is total class, cool-toned and poised, seeming to hover across the palate with an air of red inner florals, as tart woodland berries mix with hints of black tea and lemon oils. There’s a bolt of nervous acidity that keeps the experience remarkably fresh, but also adds a highly attractive sweet and sour note. And finally, while structured and youthful in feel, it finishes completely fresh, vibrant even, with dried currants enlivened by nuances of grapefruit and mint that linger on and on. This is an experience wine in every sense of the word, hailing from a dry and warm harvest yet exemplifying the purity of Sangiovese, as well as its ability to mature for well over three decades. The 1985 La Storica comes directly from the winery’s aging vault, and it was reconditioned with a new cork in 2000. |

Still explosive and heady, the 1989 captures the best of Santo Stefano vineyard as interpreted by Bruno Giacosa. There’s not much more to say. Heady Nebbiolo aromatics and dense fruit infuse this exotic, deeply satisfying Barbaresco from Bruno Giacosa. The 1989 was the first young Giacosa Riserva I bought on release. The price was $55 a bottle, which was a fortune for me at the time. Many things have changed since then. But the wine? Well, it is as monumental as ever. |

The 2001 is arguably the last truly classic vintage for the Rocche Red Label. To be sure, the 2004, 2005 and 2007 are all compelling, but the 2001 has more in common stylistically with vintages like 1996 and 1999. Dense, perfumed and wonderfully intense, the 2001 is phenomenally great. Wow. |

Medium in body, with soft contours for a young Barolo, the Acclivi is so expressive today, before it starts to shut down with air. That bodes very well for its future. As it has been for a number of years, the Acclivi is the hidden gem in this range. The 2017 is a blend of Monvigliero, Neirane and Rocche dell' Olmo, with less Monvigliero than normal because the younger vines went into the Langhe Nebbiolo, and a correspondingly higher presence of Rocche dell'Olmo. |

Powerful, dense and packed, the Cannubi is not as showy or seductive as the Monvigliero, but it has so much to offer, especially with a bit of bottle age. What a magnificent wine it is! |

Often described as the most Burgundy-like of Barolos, this wine lives up to its reputation. It is a medium-deep, bright and youthful ruby color with a rich, dense, intensely perfumed rose garden and hedonistic spice nose with notes of exotic sandalwood. The aromas and flavors are persistent and intense. The soft, round, velvety, silky texture and dense red berry and raspberry coulis flavors combine. There’s a little grip and bite to the tannins and maybe an element of green herb in the background. A lovely, sensual wine. |

The 2012 is a classic in the making, boasting enticing scents of rose, underbrush, wild red berry, new leather and underlying notes of crushed mint. It has a chiseled palate, featuring Morello cherry, pomegranate, orange zest, star anise and a hint of tobacco framed in taut, polished tannins. Firm acidity lends youthful tension and keeps it impeccably balanced. |

Vinous (98)Of the wines of the 1980s, the 1989 Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano vies for the 1982 as the best wine of a decade that saw Bruno Giacosa make a dizzying array of stunning Barolos and Barbarescos. Still explosive and heady, the 1989 captures the best of Santo Stefano vineyard as interpreted by Bruno Giacosa. There’s not much more to say. Heady Nebbiolo aromatics and dense fruit infuse this exotic, deeply satisfying Barbaresco from Bruno Giacosa. The 1989 was the first young Giacosa Riserva I bought on release. The price was $55 a bottle, which was a fortune for me at the time. Many things have changed since then. But the wine? Well, it is as monumental as ever. |

Vinous (98)The 2001 vintage in Piedmont has long been a favorite of mine. Bruno Giacosa’s 2001 Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto is explosive and decadently rich from the very first taste. The 2001 is arguably the last truly classic vintage for the Rocche Red Label. To be sure, the 2004, 2005 and 2007 are all compelling, but the 2001 has more in common stylistically with vintages like 1996 and 1999. Dense, perfumed and wonderfully intense, the 2001 is phenomenally great. Wow. |

Vinous (93)The 2017 Barolo Acclivi is rich, enveloping and so expressive. Black cherry, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice fill out the layers nicely. Medium in body, with soft contours for a young Barolo, the Acclivi is so expressive today, before it starts to shut down with air. That bodes very well for its future. As it has been for a number of years, the Acclivi is the hidden gem in this range. The 2017 is a blend of Monvigliero, Neirane and Rocche dell' Olmo, with less Monvigliero than normal because the younger vines went into the Langhe Nebbiolo, and a correspondingly higher presence of Rocche dell'Olmo. |

Vinous (97)The 2015 Barolo Cannubi is another dizzying wine from Burlotto. A rush of dark cherry, plum, hard candy licorice, violet and spice all hit the palate. Powerful and vertical in the glass, the Cannubi simply has it all. I would give the 2015 a good bit of time to shed some of its considerable baby fat. Powerful, dense and packed, the Cannubi is not as showy or seductive as the Monvigliero, but it has so much to offer, especially with a bit of bottle age. What a magnificent wine it is! |

The Wine Independent (98)This 2017 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero is from the Monvigliero vineyard, which is the jewel in the crown of Verduno. Often described as the most Burgundy-like of Barolos, this wine lives up to its reputation. It is a medium-deep, bright and youthful ruby color with a rich, dense, intensely perfumed rose garden and hedonistic spice nose with notes of exotic sandalwood. The aromas and flavors are persistent and intense. The soft, round, velvety, silky texture and dense red berry and raspberry coulis flavors combine. There’s a little grip and bite to the tannins and maybe an element of green herb in the background. A lovely, sensual wine. |
