Jeb Dunnuck (96)The 2020 Barolo, which I tasted last year as well, is a medium red/orange color, and it’s developed wonderfully with another year in bottle. It offers notes of preserved cranberry, toasted spice, fresh leather, bergamot, and cardamom. The palate is fantastic, with a more linear feel, refined tannins, an elegant and rounded mid-palate, and a more mineral-inflected finish. It’s long on the palate and is starting to show the vintage's potential. Drink 2025-2045. |

Vinous (99)The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna delle Grazie pulls you close and holds your attention with a wildly perfumed and hauntingly seductive bouquet, boasting an intense array of wild strawberry, currants, waxy rose and licorice. There are depths of plush texture, dark and rich, yet with stimulating acidity to balance, and saturating mineral-tinged red fruits and spices that cascade across the palate. This leaves you with cheek-puckering tension, chiseled structure and tart red berry concentration that seems like it could go on for days. The 2013 is dense and youthfully poised, yet aching to explode. This is just a baby today, but the potential is off the charts. The Riserva is a special, single-barrel selection made by Alessandro Mori. Wine Advocate (95+)The 2002 is another eye-opening wine. The year is mostly remembered for its cool, wet summer and a number of dilute, uninteresting wines. Not here. The 2002 Masseto will go down as one of the handful of truly great wines made that year. I imagine in ten or twenty years it will be fascinating to taste alongside Miani’s Merlot, Soldera’s Brunello Riserva and Conterno’s Monfortino. There is no question the wine is in that league. Today the 2002 remains a baby, with tons of depth in its dark fruit. Hints of rose petal and spice develop in the glass, adding further complexity. There is plenty of structure underneath, suggesting the 2002 will be a very long-lived wine. Today, it is a knock-out. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. |

Vinous (100)The 2004 Masseto, one of my personal favorites, is positively stellar. I have always adored the 2004 for its silky tannins, stunning aromatic presence and total finesse, all of which are on display today. Beautifully pure to the long finish and profoundly beautiful in every way, the 2004 has it all. It was a textbook vintage that only presented one real challenge, and that was moderating the naturally high yields that resulted from an unblocking of energy the vines had held in store from the previous year. Where producers moderated yields, the wines are often stunning, as is very much the case here. If forced to choose only one vintage of Masseto I could own or drink it would be the 2004. |

While this was the first opportunity to taste the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna delle Grazie, the wine was originally released in 2019. |

Crafted from the stunning terrains of Veneto, Italy, the Masi Amarone Valpolicella Classico Costasera 2018 is a beautifully harmonious testament to the mastery of Masi, a globally-celebrated wine producer. Its alluring sophistication springs from the unique combination of Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara grape varietals, harvested from hillside vineyards reflecting the evening sun - Costasera. The grapes undergo meticulous Appassimento, an ancient vinification method, where they are semi-dried before undergoing a long fermentation period. This exceptional wine presents an intense ruby red hue, boasting a bouquet of ripe cherries, and nuances of spicy plum. On the palate, it demonstrates finely balanced tannins, with a delectable, persistent finish. As an Amarone, it is an apt representation of the profound complexity and maturity that Masi consistently delivers. Once tasted, the Masi Amarone Valpolicella Classico Costasera 2018 lingers in the memory, making it a perfect accompaniment to red meats, game, and mature cheeses. |
