Though the 2021 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is showing a bit of reduction on the nose, it is clear that this is packed with some very attractive red fruit and floral scents. The palate is quite structured with good density, a solid RSV with a bold, saline finish. It needs a little more flesh to develop but that will be there once in bottle and given sufficient bottle age. Patience required.

An almost incredible rush of ripe plummy fruit with earth, mineral, and spice nuance leads to a texture that is at once dense, compact, and vibrant on the palate. This thrilling wine comes from 0.50 hectares of 100-year-old vines in the heart of Romanée-St-Vivant. The grapes are mostly destemmed before fermentation on wild yeast and ageing in cask (half new). This wine will open with a bit of time and should live for at least thirty years.

This is also moderately reduced and unreadable in its present condition. The intense and refined middleweight flavors possess a silky mid-palate texture that contrasts markedly with the borderline bitter, short and awkward finish. This is sufficiently disjointed that it’s very hard to say whether it will eventually come together so my projected range should be view as provisional.
