France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

The 1999 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has long been one of my favourite vintages, not that I get to taste it that often. It has an almost extravagant bouquet that delivers plush Morello cherry, wild strawberry and light cassis aromas and with aeration, these ebb to reveal more tertiary notes and a touch of pencil shavings. The palate displays exquisite balance, this being 1999, more fuller and corpulent than other vintages. This particular bottle demonstrates more structure towards the finish than I expected, exerting stupendous grip to remind you that it might be almost 20 years old, but it has 20 or perhaps even 30 years ahead of it. Magnificent. Tasted blind at the New World/Old World tasting at La Trompette.

The 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques 1er Cru is an absolute joy to behold and in terms of drinking now a sheer pleasure, surpasses both the 1996 and 2005 tasted the previous day. It bursts with pixelated red cherry and strawberry fruit on the nose, laced with minerals and light citrus scents. The palate is powerful and certainly not dense. Yet it possesses disarming transparency and fabulous precision, weightless yet paradoxically intense with a long tail on the finish. It is more a Clos Saint-Jacques of texture and feeling than obvious fruit descriptors. Wonderful. Tasted at Fook Lam Moon in Hong Kong.

Introducing the inimitable Benedicte & Stephane Tissot Arbois Chardonnay Mailloche 2018. This esteemed wine originates from the Arbois region of Jura, France, renowned for its mineral-rich limestone and fossil-infused marl soils; a unique terroir that imparts distinct characteristics to the grapes. Each vineyard parcel is vinified separately, following biodynamic principles - an approach that Benedicte & Stephane Tissot uphold to retain the purest expression of Chardonnay, emulating the nature's rhythm. After a meticulous manual harvest, the wine is matured for two years in old oak barrels to develop levels of complexity, retaining its intrinsic acidity while adding smoothness to the palate. The result is an extraordinarily balanced offering, with a rich bouquet of honeysuckle, ripe quince, and nuanced mineral notes. Perfectly embodying its terroir, Benedicte & Stephane Tissot Arbois Chardonnay Mailloche 2018 is indisputably a wine of great stature for discerning connoisseurs.

Rich, huge and explosive, the 2011 Chambertin bursts onto the palate with superb energy and pure density. Dark blue/purplish fruit, smoke, licorice and melted road tar are just some of the many notes that are alive. The 2011 is remarkably vivid and layered. The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a "big", quite ostentatious bouquet with dark cherries, crème de cassis, tinned prune and blueberries. It augurs for a top-heavy palate, though actually I find this better balanced than expected, certainly more so than the Les Beaumonts with veins of blood orange enlivening the quite persistent finish. This should age well in bottle although I would like to see more restraint on the nose.

The 2008 Pensées de Lafleur has a well-defined, smoke and truffle-tinged bouquet that is pretty and elegant, a wine that has clearly opened up in the last couple of years. Vinous - Neal Martin (90)

The 2008 Pensées de Lafleur has a well-defined, smoke and truffle-tinged bouquet that is pretty and elegant, a wine that has clearly opened up in the last couple of years. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, very focused with gentle grip in the mouth. The fruit is on the darker side laced with smoke and black pepper, fanning out gently towards the finish that remains very composed. Excellent. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 10-Year On tasting.

Wine Spectator (95)

A truly classic Pétrus and comparable to the '88, '86 and '82. Showy and impressive with excellent use of new oak. It delivers loads of toasty coconut and chocolate flavors balanced by plum and blackberry notes. Incredible concentration for the vintage. Supple, long finish. Try after 2000. -

Jancis Robinson (17)

Very little red fruit at all. Milky, salty, tight. Very austere and structural.

Vinous (96)

Inky ruby. Intense blueberry, incense, exotic spice and mineral qualities on the expansive, seductively perfumed nose. Stains the palate with spice-laced black and blue fruit, spicecake, olive and violet pastille flavors that show real power and tension and no excess fat. The floral and mineral notes drive a strikingly long, pure finish given shape by smooth, steadily building tannins.

Vinous (97)

Brilliant purple. Dark fruit, floral and spice qualities on the hugely perfumed, expansive nose, along with suggestions of incense, olive and smoky minerals. Stains the palate with powerful, youthfully concentrated blueberry, cassis, spicecake and violet pastille flavors that are given spine and lift by a core of zesty acidity. Lingers with outstanding tenacity on the sharply delineated, floral-driven finish, which is shaped by chewy, slow-building tannins.

Vinous (92)

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Ostrea comes from vines that have now been rewired higher according to Jean-Louis Trapet. It has a more mineral-driven, reserved bouquet compared to the Gevrey-Village, fragrant and beautifully defined, the 40% whole bunch lending freshness. The palate is fresh and vibrant with gentle grip, good weight, taut and fresh with a saline, Morey-like finish. Classy, for Burgundy-lovers who like their Pinot a bit cerebral.
