Rhône

The Rhône Valley, located in southeastern France, is renowned for its exceptional fine wines. With its diverse terroir, rich history, and dedication to quality winemaking, the Rhône Valley offers a captivating selection of wines that embody the region's elegance, complexity, and distinctive character.

The Rhône Valley boasts its own iconic vineyards and wineries, including Château de Beaucastel, Domaine Guigal, and Chapoutier, which are celebrated for producing exceptional wines that showcase the region's unique terroir and winemaking expertise.

The Rhône Valley is renowned for its red wines, particularly in the northern part of the region. Syrah reigns as the dominant grape variety, producing intense and structured wines. Appellations such as Côte-RôtieHermitage, and Cornas are known for their robust and age-worthy reds, often displaying notes of black fruits, spice, and earthiness. Famous vineyards such as La Landonne, La Mouline, and Les Bessards are revered for their exceptional expressions of Syrah.

In the southern Rhône Valley, Grenache takes centre stage, contributing to the region's bold and fruit-forward red blends. The renowned appellation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape is famous for its rich and full-bodied red wines, often featuring a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. Vineyards like Château de Beaucastel, Clos des Papes, and Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe produce remarkable wines that showcase the region's commitment to excellence.

The Rhône Valley is also celebrated for its white wines, particularly in the northern part of the region. Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne are the key grape varieties, producing aromatic and complex whites. Appellations like Condrieu and Hermitage produce exceptional white wines known for their floral aromas, stone fruit flavors, and vibrant acidity.

Vinous (90-92)

Bright ruby-red. Aromas of gunflint, minerals, licorice and roasted nuts. Tightly wrapped but sweet, with classic cassis and mineral flavors. Finishes quite long, with somewhat tough tannins. Very '98 in style, and built to age.

Vinous (91)

Deep aromas of honey, nuts and spicy oak, plus a slight leesy complexity. Ripe and sweet but quite suave and light on its feet. Bright and fruity. Long, perfumed back end. This is 14% alcohol and finished with less than a gram per liter residual sugar, but it is neither heavy nor excessively dry.

Vinous (95-97)

Bright saturated ruby-red. Like a fruit essence on the nose: crushed cherry and currant complicated by violet and rose petal perfume. Boasts an almost uncanny old-viney creaminess of texture, but the superripe, almost jammy flavors are perfectly framed by ripe acidity. Note of bitter chocolate. The mourvedre gives this wine superb grip, with the big but sophisticated tannins reaching the front teeth.

Vinous (91)

Medium red. Sappy, liqueur-like aromas of raspberry, red cherry and pepper, lifted by a floral quality. Lush, suave and mouthfilling, with wonderfully sweet flavors of peppery red fruits and iron. A faint porty quality contributes to its complexity. Finishes fruity and very long, with fine tannins and late notes of pepper and strawberry jam.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (95)

Deep red color. Superripe, liqueur-like aromas of raspberry, cassis and pepper. Thick and voluminous, with sound acidity giving it excellent freshness and cut. Really striking depth of fruit. Finishes with substantial but unaggressive tannins. I don't find this wine quite as fearsome today as Reynaud suggests. It will age well but should also be accessible in its youth.

Wine Advocate (100)

A rock-star 1999 that's drinking at point (like most wines in the vintage today), it should continue to evolve nicely going forward. Shockingly good, the 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape le Secret du Sabon tastes like a hypothetical blend of the 2007 and the 2001. Powerful, massive, concentrated and beautifully ripe, it offers notions of kirsch, currants, peppered meats, Asian spice and licorice in its seamless, yet voluptuous and hedonistic personality. It's a crazy good bottle of wine that could be considered over-the-top by some, but who cares when it's this good? If I had bottles, I'd line them up for drinking as you don't want to miss this beauty while it's drinking at point.
