Burghound (93)

A softly exotic and attractively spicy nose offers up notes of tangerine peel, jasmine tea, pear and a hint of oak. The rich and full-bodied flavors possess reasonable mid-palate concentration as well as fine length on the overtly saline-inflected, delineated and well-balanced finale. This is not as dense as it usually is (though it's certainly not dilute) but it should have no trouble amply rewarding extended cellaring.

The Vincent et Sophie Morey Puligny Montrachet Truffiere 2019 epitomises the pinnacle of Burgundy's esteemed white wine heritage. Cultivated in the prestigious Truffière vineyard, located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet, this Chardonnay showcases exceptional terroir expression. Meticulously hand-harvested from organically managed vines, the grapes undergo a precise vinification process involving gentle pressing and fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, preserving the wine's pure elegance. Matured for twelve months in French oak barrels, predominantly seasoned with French oak, the wine attains a harmonious balance between rich complexity and refined finesse. On the palate, vibrant notes of white citrus, ripe orchard fruits, and subtle hints of minerality unfold, underpinned by a creamy texture and a lingering, mineral-driven finish. Vincent et Sophie Morey, renowned for their commitment to sustainable viticulture and artisanal craftsmanship, deliver a Puligny Montrachet that is both sophisticated and expressive, perfect for discerning aficionados seeking unparalleled quality and distinction.

Vinous (94)

The 2017 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is slightly pale in hue and has a rather slight bouquet at first, offering fresh green apple and wet limestone aromas. I would just like more intensity, and indeed, that does develop with 10–15 minutes’ aeration. The palate is well balanced, quite saline and sappy, showing a strong marine influence, with oyster shell and crustaceans on the finish. Very fine and complex.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)

A full mid yellow, much deeper than the Bienvenues. This has all the power, and with finesse too though evidently not as much as the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. The Bâtard has just back from the rugby field. A good example though. 4 barrels made, of which one new. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023.

(5 Star Wine) One barrel, not new. A pale primrose with a startlingly fine and pure bouquet. Magical. There is a refined yet exceptionally intense pure fruit, with a saline and citrus touch behind. Ultra stylish and very pure. The finish extends beautifully behind. Bravo! Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023.

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)

The 2023 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a fairly tight bouquet with apricot, peach skin and light waxy scents. This takes time to open in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a slightly tangy, marmalade-tinged opening, fine depth and a lovely pithy core of fruit. Judiciously spiced toward the finish, this is a very commendable BBM to enjoy over 15 to 20 years.

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Blanchot-Dessus 1er Cru come across a bit sultry on the nose despite coaxing. White flowers, fresh white linen and citrus scents eventually emerge. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, fresh and quite saline, perhaps it just need a little more complexity towards the finish, but otherwise this is well-crafted.

Vinous - Neal Martin (93)

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Blanchot-Dessus 1er Cru was one of the big (pleasant) surprises of the tasting. It has a more composed and complex bouquet compared to others in this flight, with a little more crushed stone, blood oranges and light quince aromas developing in the glass. Impressive delineation and the oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is well balanced with a crisp line of acidity, just a dab of sour lemon and orange rind, quite peppery in style with a bravura finish. Much better than others in this flight, this is well worth hunting down. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Clear pale colour, a refined and chiselled nose. A little quality oak now emerges to flesh out the bouquet. The fruit is very evenly distributed across the palate, still with an oak presence, a little sandalwood, a good mix between fruit and acidity, and a fine long finish. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: November 2023.

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru is more reserved on the nose, but well defined with crushed stone and touches of pressed flowers and chai. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, much more linear, almost Puligny-like in style thanks to the calcaire terroir on the finish. Vivid and animated.

A lively lime inflected yellow. The nose is backward though speaks just a little of the limestone hillside. The intensity is there but I know more exciting examples. Quite good length of flavour. Not quite singing but may just need more elevage. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted: November 2023.

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Le Cailleret 1er Cru shows a little more reduction on the nose than the Morgeots, although there is good concentration here. The palate is quite vibrant on the entry with lemon zest, quince and a touch of orange pith. Plenty of energy, well focused with a saline finish, this is a fine Chassagne from Girardin.

Full primrose. There is an initial richness which cannot quite hide the stones beneath, nor should it. Terrific energy at the back of the palate, more so than Romanée, with fine length and the saline touch last seen in the Perrières. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.

Vines which the Vincent Girardin team manage in Les Fairendes. A gleaming lemon and lime colour, with plenty of energy but also a vivacious fresh fruit. Particularly bursting with energy on the mid palate, beautifully balanced, and with reasonable length. Does not need much more elevage. Drink from 2028-2038. Tasted: November 2023.

The 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has an attractive bouquet with lemon zest, light peppermint and orange pith notes that burst from the glass. The palate is well balanced with a waxy texture, modest weight with lemon curd, lemon thyme and Clementine towards the finish. Like Girardin’s other 2018s, what it just misses is tension and delineation, but it should give a decade’s drinking pleasure. - Neal Martin
