Good medium ruby. Aromas of plum, currant, game and leather. Silky-sweet and aromatic in the mouth, with lovely vinosity to frame the expressive flavors of roasted plum, currant, black cherry, minerals and dark chocolate. Firmly structured but quite suave, with fine tannins and very good length. Impressive for the vintage.

Highly aromatic but youthfully subdued aromas of peach blossom, fresh pineapple, minerals and spicy oak; offers lovely lift and purity. Smooth, thick and spicy, with lively acidity giving it a light touch. Fruit salad flavors complicated by notes of spice, vanilla and grilled nuts. Finishes suave and long. A very elegantly styled wine with the structure to evolve slowly.

The 1999 d'Issan has a perfumed bouquet with wilted violet petals infusing the redcurrant and cranberry scents. It is strict but detailed even if not the most complex bouquet you will encounter in this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant and supple opening. A mixture of red and black fruit here laced with tobacco, graphite and sous-bois, the 1999 has a linearity that appeals at 19-years of age. It finishes in convincing style considering the growing season. I suspect that it will not improve with further bottle age but should hold steady for another decade. Tasted at the d’Issan vertical held at the property.

Wine Advocate (93)

Deep plum, currant, and mineral notes emerge from the concentrated, beautifully balanced, pure 1999 Haut Brion. It seems to be cut from the same mold as years such as 1979 and 1985. There is a hint of graphite in the abundant fruit. The wine is medium to full-bodied, nuanced, subtle, deep, and provocatively elegant. It is made in a style that only Haut Brion appears capable of achieving. The finish is extremely long, the tannins sweet, and the overall impression one of delicacy interwoven with power and ripeness. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025.

Subtly leesy aromas of pineapple, honeysuckle and spice; comes across as more floral than mineral today. Very dense but almost magically vibrant and delineated, with the fresh pineapple flavor carrying through on the palate. Finishes with superb persistence. Wears its 14+% alcohol gracefully. Incidentally, Masclet considers the '98 Haut-Brion Blanc the second best release of the '90s, following the other-worldly '94.

Wine Advocate (95)

The 1999 Lafite Rothschild sports an engraved 1999 on the bottle along with an eclipse to mark that significant historical event of August, 1999. It is a quintessential offering from Lafite Rothschild. This prodigious wine is both elegant and intensely flavored, and almost diaphanous in its layers that unfold with no heaviness. An opaque ruby/purple color is accompanied by a complex bouquet of lead pencil, graphite, cedar, creme de cassis, toast, and vanilla. It is medium-bodied, with extravagant layers of richness yet little weight, and a finish that is all sweetness, ripeness, and harmony. This extraordinary Lafite increasingly appears to be a modern day clone of the majestic 1953. A mere one-third of the crop made it into the grand vin! Anticipated maturity: 2007-2030.

The 1999 Lafleur flies under the radar between the feted 1998 and 2000 vintages. However, it should not be under-estimated. It has a lucid deep color. The bouquet is not dissimilar to the previous bottle tasted in 2012, blessed with pure blackberry and briary scents, hints of gravel that render it not a million miles away from a Left Bank. The palate is very well balanced and seems silkier than ever. Whilst it does not possess the mineral core of the 1998, it has a disarmingly pure and graceful finish. Whilst not a Lafleur of immense length or grandeur it is approachable and beautifully crafted. Tasted at the “International Wine & Business” Lafleur dinner at Ten Trinity, London.

Experience the world-renowned Laville Haut Brion 1999. Straight from the vineyards of Pessac-Léognan, this age-worthy White Bordeaux gives an exquisite taste sensation to every discerning palate. Using a masterful blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, the famed producer Château Haut-Brion has achieved an exemplary balance of flavours. The artisanal viticulture and meticulous sorting process results in a delightful expression of minerality and white fruits with an intoxicating bouquet.

The wine's hallmark is its quintessentially Graves terroir, marked by a unique gravelly soil, lending to its complex, mineral character. Thoroughly fermented in oak barrels, the Laville Haut Brion 1999 offers a distinguished palette of nutty and creamy undertones, culminating in an elegant, lengthy finish. This prestigious wine not only reflects the exceptional savoir-faire of the producer but is a testament to the prestigious appellation itself. Each sip of the Laville Haut Brion 1999 is a rich indulgence into years of winemaking heritage.

The 1999 Le Petit Cheval has quite a high-toned, iodine-tinged bouquet with more blue fruit than expected. The palate has a fine grip and good backbone, and features cedar- and graphite-infused black fruit. I admire the density here. Impressive for a 20-year-old second wine, with a touch of clove and allspice toward the finish. Perfect to pop the cork now – and this is, dare I say, just about as good as the Grand Vin! Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the estate.

Vinous - Neal Martin (89)

The 1999 Le Petit Cheval has quite a high-toned, iodine-tinged bouquet with more blue fruit than expected. The palate has a fine grip and good backbone, and features cedar- and graphite-infused black fruit. I admire the density here. Impressive for a 20-year-old second wine, with a touch of clove and allspice toward the finish. Perfect to pop the cork now – and this is, dare I say, just about as good as the Grand Vin! Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the estate.
