First produced in 1987, Saffredi is Fattoria Le Pupille’s flagship Super Tuscan wine and in 2017 it celebrated its 30th anniversary. Saffredi 2017 is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot sourced from the famous Saffredi vineyard – which is just five hectares in the Pereta area at 250 meters above sea level. The vines face west / north-west and on mainly loamy, poorly calcareous soils, with little organic substance and poor in clay. The resulting Saffredi wine is cherished the world over for its black fruits (blackcurrant and black cherry) and spicy cloves, cinnamon and licorice.

Fattoria le Pupille is one of the most essential wineries in the landscape of the Tuscan region of Maremma; one of the Heartlands of the Super Tuscan movement along with Bolgheri. The estate itself is small by Tuscan standards, comprised of just 75 hectares, but their flagship Super Tuscan, Saffredi is one of the great wines in Tuscany. Often flying under the radar compared to the likes of the big-name Bolgheri estates, it is always released at a far more reasonable price. In terms of ratings, however, Saffredi is right up in the highest echelon.
