2020 |
Arlaud Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2020 (6x75cl) Vinous (95-97)The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, matured in 15% new oak, showed just a tiny morsel of reduction on the nose, that the concentration here was still tangible. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, taut and fresh and very precise. This has real class and verve, though it will benefit from several years in bottle.

Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2016 (6x75cl) James Suckling (99)This is a stunning Beaucastel. A classic! Has a superb array of fruit, ranging from red, through to blue, darker purple and black. Nuances of dark, stony minerals, spices, wild flowers and herbs. So fleshy. This has impeccable balance, super-silky tannins and an extraordinarily long finish. This has decades ahead of it. Billecart Salmon Brut Vintage 2008 (6x75cl)
In Bond: €481.00

2008 |
Billecart Salmon Brut Vintage 2008 (6x75cl) Decanter (97)A blend of 65% Pinot Noir consisting of Premier and Grand Crus from the Montagne de Reims and the Vallee de la Marne and 35% Chardonnay from the Cote des Blancs. Significantly, this has nine years ageing on its lees (longer than some Prestige Cuvees), the 2008 was first released onto the global market back in March 2019. With an Extra Brut dosage of 4g/l, this is a highly expressive, confident and convincing interpretation of the vintage. Right now, it is youthfully sharp and focused with fine salinity, depth, acidity and balance, and as such is already extremely approachable. The flavour spectrum encompasses toast, oyster shell, citrus, cream and a flinty, mineral depth. There’s supreme balance and elegance here, combined with a hidden underlying power that will continue to emerge and broaden with time. The finish is dry and long.

Bouchard Pere & Fils Beaune 1er Cru Les Greves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus 2019 (6x75cl) Jancis Robinson (17+)Cask sample. Really quite a pale garnet. The most ethereal of these Bouchard Père et Fils Beaunes with soaraway perfume. Precise juicy fruit offering conviction and pleasure. Fine tannins on the end. Admirable energy and persistence here. Very elegant. Expresses all that is best about Beaune. Very neat and complete – though overall it's pretty sweet! Lively.

Chapelle de Potensac 2017 (6x75cl) Vinous - Antonio Galloni (86-88)The 2017 Chapelle de Potensac is an attractive second wine from Hubert Delon's Médoc property. Soft, silky and open-knit, the 2017 is quite pretty, but its light to medium-bodied structure suggests it is best enjoyed over the near term. The red berry and floral notes are nicely delineated throughout.

Clos Frantin (Albert Bichot) Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Malconsorts 2019 (6x75cl) Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru was harvested on different days, as Bichot owns sites on varied soil profiles within the vineyard. Initially closed, it opens nicely to offer dark cherries, bergamot and tea leaf notes. The palate is very harmonious with good backbone, grippy tart red fruit and a mineral-driven, quite sturdy finish. Excellent.

Cos d'Estournel 2017 (6x75cl)

2017 |
Cos d'Estournel 2017 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (98+)Composed of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, yields for the grand vin in 2017 were 43 hectoliters per hectare, and it was aged in 60% new oak. It came in at an alcohol of 13% and an IPT of 68. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cos d'Estournel needs a little coaxing to unfurl, revealing beautiful expressions of preserved plums, boysenberries, blackcurrant pastilles and wild blueberries with hints of Indian spices, menthol, lilacs and mossy tree bark plus a compelling suggestion of iron ore. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and well-knit freshness supporting the tightly wound blue and black fruits layers, finishing long and fragrant. This wine will need a good 5-7 years in bottle before it begins to blossom and should go on for at least another 40 years. I expect this wine to be a blockbuster of a head-turner when I come back and taste it at 10 years of age!

2019 |
Domaine des Bosquets Gigondas Le Lieu Dit 2019 (6x75cl) Jeb Dunnuck (100)The 2019 Gigondas Le Lieu-Dit is as good as it gets – hats off to the young Julien Brechet for one of the finest Gigondas ever made. Coming from a cooler, sandy terroir next to this estate and all Grenache, it was 70% destemmed and spent 18 months in used demi-muids before being moved to concrete tanks prior to bottling. A Grand Cru Red Burgundy-like array of wild strawberries, framboise, flowers, sappy green herbs, and spice all emerge on the nose. This is followed by a seamless, full-bodied, incredibly pure Gigondas that’s more about finesse and elegance than sheer power. I love it today, yet it has the balance, as well as structure, to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for two decades if stored properly.

Feytit-Clinet 2018 (6x75cl) Jeb Dunnuck (96-99)From one of my favorite estates in Pomerol, situated between Trotanoy and Latour à Pomerol, the 2018 Château Feytit-Clinet is currently sitting at 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc being raised in 70% new French oak. Sporting a deep purple/blue color as well as a massive bouquet of blackberries, smoked herbs, liquid violets, and graphite, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a weightless, seamless texture, thrilling purity, and a great, great finish. It’s a powerful wine hitting 14.9% alcohol yet there’s not a trace of heat. Offering beautiful purity and flawless balance, it reminds me of the 2010, only better.

Follin-Arbelet Corton Bressandes Grand Cru 2017 (6x75cl) Vinous (92)The 2017 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru has a pastille-like purity on the nose, where morello cherries, orange blossom and crushed strawberry unfurl nicely with aeration. The cohesive palate is well-balanced with fine-grained tannins, nicely judged acidity and a grippy finish. It doesn’t want to come out and play today, but it has the focus and backbone to suggest it will drink well for a number of years. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 2021 (6x75cl) Vinous (87-89)The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Village has a fresh bouquet, perhaps just lacking a little terroir expression, possibly because around 50% here was lost to frost. The palate is better with a sappy entry, a decent spine of acidity and lightly spiced towards the finish. I suspect the aromatics will open by the time of bottling.

G d'Estournel 2018 (1x300cl) Vinous - Antonio Galloni (90-92)The Goulée by Cos d'Estournel is fabulous. Dark cherry, plum, licorice, espresso and grilled herbs all meld together effortlessly. The interplay of lifted floral/savory notes and dense fruit makes for a striking, absolutely alluring wine. Quite simply, the 2018 is one of the best versions of this Haut-Médoc I can remember tasting. Goulée has all the potential to be a real overachiever. The blend is 73% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc. Yields were just 33 hectoliters per hectare, as opposed to the more typical 45-50. Tasted two times.

Guillaume Selosse Largillier NV (6x75cl) Vinous (93)The NV Largillier, 100% Pinot Noir, needs a bit of air to show at its best. Rich layers of Pinot fruit, dried flowers, spice and mint start to open over time. Effusive and supple, the Largillier exudes lovely breadth in a creamy, ample style that offers tons of approachability. It is at once deep and yet also wonderfully translucent. Dried rose petal, cinnamon and a touch of reduction linger. The Largillier emerges from a site farmed in Ville-sur-Arce farmed by Jerome Coessens. Disgorged: September 3, 2019.

Haut-Batailley 2016 (6x75cl) Vinous - Neal Martin (94)The 2016 Haut-Batailley was tasted from two bottles, the first showing a touch of TCA. The second has an airy and well-defined bouquet of blackberry, graphite and subtle floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and very classic in style, displaying impressive grip. I appreciate the substance toward the finish, and the pencil lead lingering on the aftertaste. This is an outstanding Haut-Batailley. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting.

2011 |
Jean Chauvenet Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains 2011 (6x75cl) Burghound (92)Moderately generous wood frames an otherwise reserved and brooding nose of plum, dark cherry, pungent earth and sauvage aromas. Similarly there is plenty of earth character to the robust and intense middle weight plus flavors that exude a distinct floral component on the complex, balanced and muscular finish. This is a big wine, particularly for the vintage and in this case it will require at least a decade to resolve the presently very firm tannic spine.

2013 |
Jean Chauvenet Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains 2013 (6x75cl) Burghound (92)A brooding and ultra-serious nose features notes of black berry liqueur along with plenty of earth and game nuances. There is fine verve to the imposing, robust and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors that are shaped by very firm and somewhat rustic tannins on the very powerful and palate coating finish. Despite the considerable size and weight this remains very well balanced though note well that this will require plenty of cellar time. In sum, this is textbook Vaucrains.

2014 |
Jean Chauvenet Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains 2014 (6x75cl) Burghound (93)An admirably layered nose is composed of an impressively broad array of plum, violet, earth, sauvage and discreet spice nuances. There is outstanding power, intensity and size to the big-bodied flavors that exhibit huge length on the vibrant and, unusually, only a trace of backend rusticity. The tannic spine though is pronounced and this is clearly going to need a long time in a cool cellar before it reaches its apogee. Another one to look for provided that you have the patience to allow the firm tannins to soften.

2015 |
Jean Chauvenet Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains 2015 (6x75cl) Burghound (94)An exuberantly fresh and unusually expressive nose offers up notes of leather, plum, violet, spice and plenty of earth influence along with the same menthol note found in the Perrières. Somewhat curiously relative to past vintages, the mouthfeel of the focused, intense and powerful flavors is less rustic than usual though to be sure this is still very Vaucrains in style as there is plenty of punch and youthful austerity present on the driving and hugely long finish. Vaucrains is one of the longest-lived Nuits 1ers and this particular example will be no exception. A stunner but lots of patience will be required.

2016 |
Jean Chauvenet Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains 2016 (6x75cl) Burghound (91-93)This is aromatically similar to the Perrières though the menthol character is a bit more prominent. As is virtually always the case chez Chauvenet, this is the biggest and most powerful wine in the range as there is terrific mid-palate concentration that only adds to the sense of volume and opulence, all wrapped in a very firm, serious and brooding finish. Notwithstanding the abundant sap, this is very clearly built for the long-term and is a wine that should be put in your 'buy and forget' category.
