Burgundy 2021 En Primeur
Our annual trip to the Cote d’Or to taste the new vintage is always a highlight of the year. This year felt extra special as travel restrictions that had kept us stuck at home were finally lifted. The 2021 was a reasonably brutal year in Burgundy, with numerous issues that have sadly hammered the production size significantly.
Plainly, 2021 will be a varied vintage and generalising it will be a difficult thing to do. Still, there are indeed some exceptional Pinot and Chardonnay examples that have triumphed over the dramatic vintage. Despite the challenges imposed by the weather, these wines saw a remarkable comeback to the classical style, with very moderate alcohol levels falling between 12.5 to 13.2%.
Careful selection is required for this vintage, and our buying team is pleased to provide more details and insider tips after a fruitful tasting week at Burgundy. Stay closely with us on this exciting campaign!

Vinous (93-95)The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is more expressive on the nose than the Bienvenue with more terroir expression and complexity. The palate is also more agreeable: better balance and more finesse, quite pretty with a harmonious and persistent finish. This is very promising. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)2.5 barrels made, mostly from the Chassagne side. Fair depth of yellow with real concentration but maybe stops a little shorter. Digs deep with some pear notes, a slight crystalline reduction at the finish. More depth than the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, but perhaps less flair. Drink from 2027-2035. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)Pure powerful lemon yellow, and there is power too to the yellow fruit of the bouquet. Very backward in its elevage at the moment. Quite high acidity, this 2021 Blanchot has all the constituent parts, but not quite in place as yet. Drink from 2026-2031. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)From all three sides of the hill and another plot by the cross called “Quintessence”, which was not possible to make separately in 2021. One third came in grapes from Pernand, the rest sourced as must from Aloxe and Ladoix. Bright mid yellow. An interesting complex nose, huge stony intensity in the middle, impressive for this vintage in this appellation, a lick of vanilla behind, with very good length. Needs plenty more elevage. Drink from 2027-2035. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2021 Montrachet Grand Cru has a curious nose with yellow fruit, lemon verbena, quince and wax resin. It is shaded by the Bâtard-Montrachet to be frank. The palate is quite weighty and very phenolic; with slightly lower acidity than the Bâtard, I found myself desiring more freshness and nerve on the finish. I feel a bit short-changed given the vineyard. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)From three sources, all in the upper part. Glowing mid yellow. Lovely weight of fruit here, the oak lending a light coconut touch. There is a proper concentration behind, ripe enough as well, almost a petrol noted, and very persistent. Drink from 2026-2031. |
