Burgundy 2021 En Primeur
Our annual trip to the Cote d’Or to taste the new vintage is always a highlight of the year. This year felt extra special as travel restrictions that had kept us stuck at home were finally lifted. The 2021 was a reasonably brutal year in Burgundy, with numerous issues that have sadly hammered the production size significantly.
Plainly, 2021 will be a varied vintage and generalising it will be a difficult thing to do. Still, there are indeed some exceptional Pinot and Chardonnay examples that have triumphed over the dramatic vintage. Despite the challenges imposed by the weather, these wines saw a remarkable comeback to the classical style, with very moderate alcohol levels falling between 12.5 to 13.2%.
Careful selection is required for this vintage, and our buying team is pleased to provide more details and insider tips after a fruitful tasting week at Burgundy. Stay closely with us on this exciting campaign!

Vinous (87)The 2021 Bourgogne Blanc has a well-defined bouquet, simple but focused. The palate is well balanced with a slightly honeyed opening, fine acidity with touch of almond and spice on the finish. Lovely. |

Vinous (88-90)The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru just misses the mineralité expressed by other cuvées on the nose - a little one-dimensional by comparison. The palate is better with fine "bite" on the entry, moderate depth, perhaps just needing a little more precision on the finish. |

Vinous (88-90)The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru has a light but focused nose, airy with touches of petrichor coming through. The palate is balanced with a slightly waxy entry, decent depth and a touch of lemongrass towards the finish; it just misses the tension of other recent vintages. |

Vinous (87-89)The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Village has a fresh bouquet, perhaps just lacking a little terroir expression, possibly because around 50% here was lost to frost. The palate is better with a sappy entry, a decent spine of acidity and lightly spiced towards the finish. I suspect the aromatics will open by the time of bottling. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge has a tertiary red berry and undergrowth-tinged bouquet that unfurls gradually in the glass. The palate is well balanced with an edgy opening and fresh red berry fruit with a lively appealing finish. Worth seeking out. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2021 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, represented by five barrels this year, has a refined and focused bouquet, just a subtle reduction at play here. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, harmonious with a gorgeous smooth texture, gently unfurling with a tender yet concentrated finish. Wonderful. |
