Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)

Bottled end October. Fine pale lemon colour with a definite green tint. Tense powerful crisp fruit, the crunchy side of orchard fruit, then builds in richness to the back, before rediscovering its minerality to finish. Notably persistent, I can see the point in Musigny Blanc more easily than I used to! Drink from 2030-2040.

Decanter (98)

A tasting of each of the seven 2022 Musigny VV sub-sections and an approximate blend hint at a wine of almost voluptuous sensuality, with expressive mulberry and pomegranate fruit and hints of earth, smoke and liquorice that waft from the glass. The texture is powerfully tannic and dense but almost infinitely silky, and there is a dynamic interplay between the perfumed fruit and robust structure. Ideally, wait a decade before opening.

Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97)

The 2022 Musigny Grand Cru contains 50% whole bunches and was raised entirely in new oak. It comprises four 150-liter barrels. Maybe that smaller size means greater wood impact on the nose: at the moment, it just occludes the fruit profile, the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannins, dark berry fruit, black pepper, dark chocolate, mint, and a touch of cloves. The finish has fine weight and depth, although it will require a decade to soak up the new wood. It's a fine Musigny, but you'll need to taste this after time in bottle to gauge the quality.

Vinous (87-89)

The 2022 Santenay Les Pierres Sèches comprises five barrels this year (one new). Orchard fruit mixed with light honeyed scents on the nose, perhaps requiring just a little more delineation. The palate is well-balanced with commendable purity, slightly waxy in texture, with a dab of stem ginger enlivening the finish. Fine weight and persistence, I prefer this to the previous vintage.

Vinous - Neal Martin (96-98)

The 2022 Musigny Grand Cru underwent two pickings, August 27 for the declassified younger vines, and September 5. It has a well-defined bouquet with touches of undergrowth infusing the brambly red fruit, graphite and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh, and vibrant with svelte tannins, fine acidity, and an elegant finish. This very refined Musigny will improve with bottle age.

Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97)

The 2022 Musigny Grand Cru does not hold back with a multi-layered nose of wild strawberry, raspberry, forest floor, pain d'épice and a light ash-like scent. Very absorbing and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins. Impressive depth and grip, as you would expect from a Musigny, with a touch of white pepper and orange rind towards the finish. Very long. It will require 8 to 10 years in bottle, but it's certainly worth the wait.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (88-90)

The Clos de Malte has a lively ruby colour. The nose is an immediate delight of fresh red fruit, a bit of cherry. Firm structure, acidity, tannins and a little nuttiness, all of which will resolve reasonably quickly in bottle, leaving this entirely delicious fruit to enjoy. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: October 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-90)

A pretty mid purple, soft and elegant on the nose. Fills the mouth very well, with a good point of acidity, while staying true to its name of Charmes. Good length here. Drink from 2026-2029. Tasted: October 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-90)

Fresh purple colour. 17 barrels worth in all. A middle weight purple, pure clean and lively raspberry fruit, good acidity behind. This is a more accessible style of wine, still with good length, but a little less structure. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: October 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-90)

Made in a mix of 350 and new 600 litre barrels. Mid lemon yellow. A little toast on the nose, this is stricter than Champ Claude, just a little bit of reduction, good length again. Develops a more concentrated apple note further back on the palate. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-90)

From Les Hates and Prarons. Mid purple, A greener aspect to the nose, but an extra degree of classy red fruit on the palate, and a better texture at the finish. Good judgement with the degree of whole bunches, I think. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: October 2023.
