Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Discover an exceptional vintage with the Arnoux Pere et Fils Savigny-les-Beaune 2022. This French Pinot Noir hails from the renowned Burgundy wine region and is the proud creation of the Arnoux family, who have been making world-class wines since 1858. Meticulously crafted under the guidance of Pascal Arnoux, this 2022 vintage exhibits remarkable expressions of terroir with every sip.

Lauded for its enticingly fragrant red fruit notes, the Arnoux Pere et Fils Savigny-les-Beaune 2022 has a delicate yet firm structure, underpinned by subtle hints of oak derived from well-judged ageing. The vineyard’s unique clay and limestone soils contribute to the wine's illustrious minerality and elegant finish.

A quintessentially Burgundian experience, the Arnoux Pere et Fils Savigny-les-Beaune 2022 is truly a reflection of quality winemaking spanning four generations, offering indescribable pleasure to the discerning connoisseur.

Mid purple, the Vergelesses has the elegance which the Haut Jarrons perhaps lacks, fine grained tannins, a bit firmer at the finish, but the red berry fruit continues on behind. 13.3% Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: October 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (88-90)

Racked 6 weeks ago. Deep crimson, with rich raspberry and strawberry fruit, some tannins but in proportion to the fruit and enough acidity. This is nicely poised, not too ripe, and with good length. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.

James Suckling (96-97)

Quite a shy nose, but on the palate this is so dense without the slightest hint of heaviness. All red fruits with an almost lemony freshness at the long, intensely mineral finish. Great potential!

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)

A beautifully fresh magenta colour. The bouquet offers lively red berries, with some elegance as well, a little tighter at the finish, but crunchy fruit too comes back. A fine, crisp and attractively perfumed Savigny. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023.

A rich deep purple. the nose too is luxurious, with a touch of coconut as well. Totally fills the mouth but there is just a little more precision than the Chorey. The fruit and the coconut make me think of Lamingtons. As long as the coconut dies down this will be pretty impressive. Drink from 2025-2030. Tasted: November 2022.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (88-90)

Pale lime colour. The bouquet is quite refined, not too much oak showing. There is high quality fresh apple on the palate, maintain the sense of refinement, with a good fruit acid balance in the persistent finish. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2023.

(5 Star Wine) A fine rich mid purple. A bouquet of startling beauty, the fruit profile follows the vintage on its raspberry and cherry axis, but it is the class which counts. This Latricières delivers grand cru intensity in a particularly fine framework, with good acidity as much as tannin to provide the structure. A fine persistent finish. Wonderful wine. Drink from 2034-2042. Tasted: November 2023.

Mid lemon yellow. The nose has some elegance, while the palate appears a little riper, with some honeyed melon, but the finish retains its fresher note. Plenty of citrus energy. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted: October 2023.

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)

The 2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune La Dominode 1er Cru is a notch more intense on the nose than the Clos des Guettes, but side-by-side, I find the latter imbued with greater charm. The palate is well-balanced with slightly powdery tannins, attractive and quite plush black cherry and mulberry fruit. It gains weight towards the finish but retains its smooth and sleek texture. Like the Clos des Guettes, this will be difficult to resist in its youth.

All destemmed, and now racked to tank, after 25% new wood. A fine bright crimson purple, with lifted fruit, showing both energy and balance. I like Savigny in 2022. Typical briary red fruit with well-integrated tannins. Fair length. Drink from 2030-2035. Tasted: December 2023.

A crisp clear purple. The nose is a little more exuberant than Lavières, perhaps going to a slightly darker riper fruit, with happily enough acidity. Just a little more rustic in the tannins. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: October 2023.
