Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)The 2022 Volnay Clos de la Barre 1er Cru is very ripe and almost ostentatious on the nose with its plush red plum and fresh figgy scents. Maybe just a little over-ripe? The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, saturated tannins. This is a "big" Volnay, with plenty of "rondeur" with a welcome pinch of cracked black pepper enlivening the finish. If you're not bothered about elegance, this may suit you, though I might err toward the excellent 2021. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)A beautifully fresh magenta colour. The bouquet offers lively red berries, with some elegance as well, a little tighter at the finish, but crunchy fruit too comes back. A fine, crisp and attractively perfumed Savigny. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

€243.00 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)A fuller ruby purple, fully ripe, juicy red fruit, more substantial than Couchereaux, a fine fresh acidity and fewer tannins. Boucherottes achieves generosity while retaining precision. Lovely. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)(5 Star Wine) Fresh purple of medium depth. Much the liveliest bouquet with its concentration of raspberries, very complete and absolutely delicious. The finish continues gorgeously, this will make a beautiful bottle with a little patience. This Clos des Ursules shows the classic peacock’s fantail of aromatics. |

(6x75cl)
2022

Burgundy | - | 93-95 (VN (NM)) |
In Bond
€646.00 |
||||
Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)The 2022 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with dark plum, raspberry coulis, incense and light sous-bois scents. It takes quite a few swirls of the glass to get the aromas going. The palate is medium-bodied with a structured, assertive opening. The tannins are slightly chalky, lending this Corton-Pougets edginess/nerve. Fine mineralité towards the finish yet tightly wound and almost curmudgeonly in its nascent state, this Grand Cru will demand long-term agin |

€1,154.77 |

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)The 2022 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru is much more expressive than the Les Theurons and develops a charming, quite discrete, terroir-driven bouquet with dried rose petals infusing the red fruit. The medium-bodied palate has very finely knit tannins and beautifully integrated oak, delineated and quite poised towards the almost Gevrey-like finish. Bon vin. |

€341.00 |
||||
Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)The 2022 Beaune Grèves le Clos Blanc 1er Cru follows up its impressive showing last year. There’s wonderful purity on the nose with yellow plum, meringue and wisps of candy floss, yet underneath, you can feel the terroir expression that will come through with time. The palate is very well-balanced with a fine silver bead of acidity. One of the most tensile and energetic of Jadot's whites, with Conference pear and gooseberry popping up on the finish. This will be fascinating to watch age in bottle |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (88-91)An attractive fresh mid purple. I am not finding much on the nose at first, just a nutty note mixed in with the fruit perhaps. The Theurons is well balanced on the palate, a medium density of fruit, rather more structure behind. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Burgundy | - | 88-90 (VN (NM)) |
In Bond
€150.00 |
||||
Vinous - Neal Martin (88-90)The 2022 Marsannay Clos du Roy is one of the most backward reds from Jadot in barrel, but I managed to eke out some attractive raspberry, crushed strawberry and sous-bois aromas that look promising. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, well-judged acidity and a surprisingly dense finish just needing to forage a little more mineralité. Good potential, but it will require 3 or 4 year |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (88-90)One of the lighter wines in colour. A pretty, almost floral bouquet. Nothing sturdy here but it is extremely pleasing. Not full but not weak, not long but with an adequate finish. Just a really pretty wine for spring and early summer. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)Mid lemon yellow. A very slight toasty note. This is fuller than the more mineral Croix de Pierre, as it gets the western sun, but that makes for a very pleasing, rounded mouthful. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)Mid lemon yellow. The nose has some elegance, while the palate appears a little riper, with some honeyed melon, but the finish retains its fresher note. Plenty of citrus energy. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted: October 2023. |

Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Aux Cras
(6x75cl)
2022
|
|
Burgundy | - | 89-91 (VN (NM)) |
In Bond
€1,154.77 |
||||
Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91)The 2022 Beaune Cras 1er Cru was more reduced than the preceding Beaune Grèves and demands more coaxing: darker fruit and a light marine influence at play, but it will need time. The palate is medium-bodied and more muscular than the Grèves. Impressive depth and grip, quite bold towards the finish if missing the same sense of panache. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)A fuller yellow, with a softer nose, almost buttery, rather attractive. This is quite gentle at the front of the palate, gains in weight further behind, with a mix of light acidity and slight youthful bitterness. The Beaune Bressandes Blanc remains a discreet wine but attractive. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023. |

Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses
(6x75cl)
2022
|
|
Burgundy | - | 93-95 (VN (NM)) |
In Bond
€1,000.00 |
||||
Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru showed more reduction on the nose compared to the Bonnes-Mares: brambly red fruit, Earl Grey, and light forest floor aromas blossom in the glass. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, velvety smooth with maraschino cherries, marmalade and touches of fresh fig. This is quite exotic towards the finish. By direct comparison, the aforementioned Grand Cru has a little more composure and restraint and perhaps handled the warmth of the growing season better. Still, it's a lovely Amoureuses. |

Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuees
(6x75cl)
2022
|
|
Burgundy | - | 92-95 (IB) |
In Bond
€1,000.00 |
||||
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Frédéric Barnier notes that Fuées does not suffer in the dry years whereas the clay in Baudes can block the water supply. A clear pure crimson purple. The nose has charm and elegance with fruit on the palate better balanced than Baudes. It is not a hugely demonstrative wine, but there is a coherent elegance throughout. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: October 2023 |
|||||||||

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)Glowing fresh crimson colour. The nose shows fresh fruit without detail as yet. I am impressed by the weight and energy of this very promising Clos Vougeot There is plenty up front, muscular, but enough behind too. A beautiful finish as pure class peeps throughout. Very happy with this! Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023. |

Louis Jadot Cote De Nuits Villages Le Vaucrain
(6x75cl)
2022
|
|
Burgundy | - | 89-91 (IB) |
In Bond
€173.00 |
||||
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)Frédéric Barnier notes that Le Vaucrain is a really balanced vineyard up and down the slope, the interplay of soil and rock, and with good water sources. The 2022 has a bright red fruit, fresh and immediate, plenty of energy, gaining in concentration through the middle, with an agreeable mineral quality to finish. Plenty of fruit to return behind. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |
|||||||||
Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques
(6x75cl)
2022
|
|
Burgundy | - | 95-97 (VN (NM)) |
In Bond
€1,000.00 |
||||
Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97)The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru absolutely delivers on the nose from the very first sniff: complex mineral-driven red berry fruit, exquisitely defined, takes it up another level from the Lavaux Saint-Jacques. The palate is beautifully balanced with finely chiseled tannins. Poised yet powerful, it fans effortlessly toward the immensely detailed and beguiling finish. Jadot has stepped up a gear in terms of its Clos Saint-Jacques in recent vintages (for example, the 2019), and this will give the likes of Rousseau and Clair a run for their money. |

€150.00 |
||||
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)A mid ruby crimson colour. There is a greater depth of pure red strawberry/raspberry fruit with a suggestion of some grip. Definitely enough structure behind but this is still fruit forward. Very nicely made. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

||||
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)Pale in colour, the nose displaying a slight green hazelnut reduction which is not at all unpleasant. Indeed, it adds tension to the wine. There is impressive weight on the palate, some concentrated plum and greengage, good acidity. This still needs more elevage but shows promise. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)The 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses Clos de la Croix de Pierre has more detail and terroir expression than the Combottes: well-defined with crushed stone and dried yellow flowers complementing the citrus fruit. The palate is well-balanced with a waxy texture. A dash of white pepper enlivens this Pernand, which fans out nicely on the finish. One of my picks from Jadot's whites this year. |
