Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Grown in the red soil sector. Their vines in the upper part, on white soil, are still too young to include. Mid crimson red. Plenty of whole bunches on the nose, so I love it, along with the slightly wilder aspect typical of Bonnes Mares. Very complete with a beautiful ripe round dark red fruit suffusing the middle of the palate, and very good acidity. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

Purple colour. A very heady nose, luxurious, nothing cooked. A consistent, coherent richness throughout, with a raft of tannins to finish, but they do not dry out the wine at all. A final ball of dark cherry fruit at the very end. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.

Just taken from the plot up at the top as the lower plot has very young vines. Dark crimson to magenta colour. The nose is powerful, coming across as four-square after the ethereal Cazetiers. Impeccable density and as usual less immediate detail in the fruit, which is ripe and red rather than black. 60% whole bunch which livens it up but is less easily visible. Just the right tannins, fine length. Very good promise. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023.

Mid to deep crimson. Cooked strawberries on the nose. Not really cooked, crushed and peppery really. 50% whole bunches can be seen as well as the limestone aspect of the top of the hill. Almost floral, aiming at a more elegant style rather than a massive one, given the situation. But a very long finish. I was also shown an amphora version of the Corton which had a mid-crimson colour, with a dark raspberry and crushed strawberry nose. Like the Clos de la Mousse, the amphora version comes across as a bit gravelly, the tannins a little more pronounced. Scored for the main version. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

Rich dark purple, not racked, so the nose is a bit edgy at the moment. There is impressive density here, plus some raw tannins, giving a drier finish. No doubting the concentration though. This may just be in a very backward stage. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

Racked 6 weeks ago. Deep crimson, with rich raspberry and strawberry fruit, some tannins but in proportion to the fruit and enough acidity. This is nicely poised, not too ripe, and with good length. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.

A small yield in 2022, making it hard to judge the picking date. A rich deep purple in the centre. The oak adds a sheen to the nose. There is vigour to this albeit with a slightly riper fruit profile, but the structure is balanced very well by a fresher limestone feel. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023.

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a focused and intense nose: blackberry and raspberry fruit, melted tar, and discrete touches of dried white flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and fresh acidity. It’s quite ripe towards the finish, leaning a little too far towards the blacker side of the fruit spectrum at the expense of Pinoté.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

5 Star Wines A beautiful full fresh purple. The nose is exquisite even in the large-scale eyes of the vintage. This is a luxurious and noble Beaune with very good acidity. The deep, dark raspberry fruit absolutely fills the palate, the tannins still need to refine with the second half of the elevage but the finish promises a very fine wine. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

A fine bright purple. Concentrated raspberry with a bit of strawberry. There is a more graceful rounded character to the fruit here, a certain succulence into which the oak blends very well. This has a fine sense of harmony and will make an agreeable bottle in the not too distant future. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023.
