Vinous - Antonio Galloni (91)The 2017 Alcée has turned out beautifully. Espresso, mocha, sweet red cherry, red plum, mint, cedar and spice give the 2017 very pretty aromatic brightness. Pliant and racy. This mid-weight Nicolas Thienpont's Côtes de Castillon has so much to offer. A touch of whole clusters adds nuance and vibrancy to this very pretty and expressive red. I would give it another year in bottle. There is plenty to look forward to, that is for sure. Tasted three times. |

Decanter (96)Emmanuelle has been making wine here for 22 years now. The freshness of the Merlot in 2017 reminds her of 2001 - I would certainly agree, and maybe with a hint of 2014 too. It's a beautiful wine, voluptuous but elegant. These vines were not frosted, but the Cabernet Franc produced less than usual, and they also made an extremely careful selection overall, leading to a yield of 30hl/ha. The wine has great complexity, which is a standout character in 2017, with bilberries, charcoal and plush damson - the Angelus signature of power and glamour. There is good tannic density here and it will clearly merit long ageing. 85,000 bottles of Angelus produced, representing around 80% of total production. Matured in 100% new oak. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (95)The 2017 Beychevelle is a luscious, extroverted beauty. An exotic mélange of super-ripe dark cherry, red plum, pomegranate, espresso, licorice and blood orange build as this potent, unctuous Saint-Julien opens up in the glass. The tannins need time to soften but should not be much of an issue in another few years' time. I very much like the push and pull of ripeness and energy in the 2017. In a word: memorable. James Suckling (93)A dense and fresh white at the same time with cooked apples, lemon rind and minerals. Bright and vivid yet shows depth and seriousness. Phenolic and vivid. Hints of fresh herbs. Drink or hold. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (90)The 2017 Bonalgue is a dense, potent wine. Blackberry jam, chocolate, licorice, spice, menthol, and espresso give the 2017 notable sweetness and richness. This is an especially dense, concentrated Pomerol with good balance and tons of immediate appeal. There is not much subtlety here, but there is plenty to like just the same. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (91)The 2017 Boyd-Cantenac is noticeably deep in colour. It has a very intense bouquet with baked black cherries mixed with iodine and light violet aromas, becoming more floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, but clearly much more backward than its peers with a strong Pauillac-inspired, graphite finish. A really interesting Margaux that I am fascinated to see evolve. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (94)The 2017 Branaire-Ducru is all class and finesse. Bright and focused, the 2017 speaks with a clear, well-articulated voice. I especially like the energy here. Soft and understated in the classic Branaire style, the 2017 offers notes of red and purplish fruit intermingled with expressive floral and spice notes. The 2017 is such a pretty Saint-Julien. Tasted two times. |

Wine Enthusiast (95)While the wood flavors are palpable in this wine, so are the firm tannins and dense black fruit. These elements suggest a wine that will have power and great concentration while also generous blackberry fruits. Drink from 2024. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (97)Nicolas Audebert and his team have done it again. The 2017 Canon is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. Rich and vertical in construction, the 2017 possesses off-the-charts richness and intensity in all of its dimensions. In the glass, the 2017 is sumptuous and layered, with superb detail and tons of sheer pedigree. In 20 years, readers will have a fabulous time tasting the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 together and debating their respective merits. Dark plum fruit, striking Franc aromatics and the clean, focused energy of Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau make for a ravishing, exquisite wine of the highest level. In a word: breathtaking. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (95+)The 2017 Canon La Gaffelière is another highlight in this range from Stephan von Neipperg. Bright, floral and punchy, the 2017 impresses for its energy and drive. Dried rose petal, mint, sage, tobacco, cedar and licorice add pretty top notes to this highly nuanced, layered Saint-Émilion. The Cabernet Franc is so expressive here. Quite simply, the 2017 is a wine of pure and total finesse. Tasted two times. |
