Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (95)

Beautifully judged extraction of fruit, and a tender quality to the tannins. A touch of gunsmoke on the finish, with a tightrope walk of acidity and concentrated blackcurrant and black cherry fruit. This is confident, precise, not overly generous, but gives the most lovely Pauillac kick. 65% new oak. D'Armailhac 2019 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (92-94)

I've always loved this château, and it offers lots of bang for the buck. The 2019 Château D'Armailhac reveals a dense purple hue to go with textbook Pauillac graphite and lead pencil notes as well as more cassis style fruits, background tobacco, and subtle oak. Medium to full-bodied and elegant on the palate, it's a seamless, balanced effort to drink over the coming two decades or more.

Plenty of fierce Pauillac tannins here, this has grip and character, full of black chocolate and smoked earth. Needs the full ten years before the nuances will be fully revealed, but the construction and the precision are already of full display. Confident blackberry, cassis, bilberry fruits, smoked cedar and crushed mint leaf, moving slowly but surely forward through the wall of tannins. Excellent stuff from the Lynch Bages team. 75% new oak.

Pichon Baron 2019 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97-100+)

The 2019 Pichon-Longueville Baron is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot, harvested from the 18th of September to the 11th of October. It is being aged in French oak barrels, 80% new, for 18 months. This grand vin represents 49% of the harvest. Very deep purple-black in color, the nose skyrockets from the glass with vibrant scents of freshly crushed blackberries, black raspberries and blackcurrant pastilles followed by perfumed sparks of fragrant earth, clove oil, lilacs, crushed rocks, molten chocolate and cinnamon toast. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with layer upon layer of black fruit, mineral and exotic spices, framed by beautifully ripe, finely-grained tannins and tons of freshness, finishing with a lingering soft-spoken whisper of floral and earth notions. This is an absolutely beguiling expression that is classic Pauillac and yet it is Pauillac like no other.

Pichon Lalande 2019 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (98-100)

Nicolas Glumineau continues to work magic at this estate. His 2019 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande is based on 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc that will spend 18 in 60% new French oak. Reminding me of a slightly deeper, richer version of the 2016, it offers a totally thrilling bouquet of blackcurrants, pure cassis, tobacco leaf, chocolate, and a hint of lead pencil. A total monster on the palate, with a full-bodied, deep, powerful texture, it has a huge mid-palate, building yet ripe tannins, not a hard edge to be found, and is as Pauillac as Pauillac gets. I was able to taste this barrel sample over multiple days, and it's one of the most profound young Bordeaux I've ever tasted.

Pontet Canet 2019 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (98-100)

The blend this year is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Very deep purple-black colored, the 2019 Pontet-Canet has the most gorgeous, lifted perfume of lilacs, dark chocolate, Morello cherries and rosehip tea over a core of crème de cassis, plum preserves, licorice and woodsmoke with a waft of fragrant soil. Full-bodied, rich and fantastically opulent, the palate offers layer upon layer of ripe, finely grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and mineral laced. A real head-turner, this beauty is absolutely going to steal your heart!

Sociando-Mallet 2019 (6x75cl)

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (94)

Located on one of the best quality gravel slopes of the Haut-Médoc, in the village of St Seurin de Cadourne, this is packed with cassis and damson fruits, plenty of tannic structure that holds everything firmly in place but lets the juice through even at this young point in its life. This is a blockbuster Sociando, one of the best in recent vintages, one to cellar for a good five or six years and then let rip. Cocoa bean, liquorice, slate, all delivered with poise and control. Elegant and a little austere right now but everything is in place for the future. A fitting tribute to Jean Gautreau (you'll see Hommage à Jean Gautreau on the bottle). A yield of 43hl/ha. 90% new oak. Consultant oenologist Michel-Bernard Couasnon.

Lynch Bages 2019 (6x75cl)

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (97)

Plenty of fierce Pauillac tannins here, this has grip and character, full of black chocolate and smoked earth. Needs the full ten years before the nuances will be fully revealed, but the construction and the precision are already of full display. Confident blackberry, cassis, bilberry fruits, smoked cedar and crushed mint leaf, moving slowly but surely forward through the wall of tannins. Excellent stuff from the Lynch Bages team. 75% new oak.

This shows purity of fruit with blackcurrants and cassis and hints of blueberries and fresh flowers. Toasted and roasted. The 90% of cabernet sauvignon really makes this special. Lead-pencil, tar and licorice notes. Powerful with finesse. Extremely persistent.
