Vinous - Neal Martin (98)The 2019 Clinet has maintained the stunning delineation that I discerned from the barrel sample. Pure black cherries, hints of cassis and wilted violet scents unfold in the glass with effortless ease, and the oak (75% new, 25% used for 18 months) is neatly integrated. The poised palate is medium-bodied, taut and fresh, with fine-grained tannins and disarming mineralité, particularly toward the finish, which delivers tremendous length and saliva-inducing salinity on the aftertaste. There is a pleasing strictness to this Clinet that is apposite to the flamboyant and decadent wines of the Nineties. This Clinet is one of Ronan Laborde's great achievements. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (91)The 2019 La Grave is powerful and a bit rustic, but also impeccably balanced. Dark cherry, gravel cured meat, spice, tobacco and game are all kicked up in this decidedly rustic yet flavorful Pomerol. |

Jeb Dunnuck (100)An utterly brilliant Pomerol and the finest wine from this estate to date, surpassing even the 2016, the 2019 Château La Conseillante checks in as 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc and was raised in 70% new French oak. A wine of incredible finesse, purity, and precision, its deep purple hue is following by an incredible array of blueberries, crème de cassis, spring flowers, damp earth, and violets. Flawlessly balanced, full-bodied, and concentrated on the palate, it has a beautiful mid-palate, ultra-fine, utterly seamless tannins, and a heavenly finish. It doesn't have the sheer density or outright power of some of the other top Pomerols, but as I wrote in the barrel sample review, no one marries elegance with opulence as well as Conseillante. This magical Pomerol will take a decade to hit full maturity and will evolve for 30 years or more. This is haute couture at its absolute pinnacle, and as I wrote in the barrel review, hats off to Marielle Cazaux for producing one of the top wines of the vintage. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92)I’ve criticized many previous vintages of this Pomerol, but the 2019 Lagrange gives notice of improvements afoot. Now in bottle, it has a very pleasant and quite concentrated bouquet of black cherries, raspberry coulis and light truffle scents laced with blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a velvety entry and a ripe, slightly confit, spicy finish. A surprisingly plush and well-defined Lagrange that has lived up to its promise and is well worth checking out. A harbinger of things to come? |

Jeb Dunnuck (96-99)From one of my favorite estates in Pomerol, the deep purple-hued 2019 Château Le Gay checks in as 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc brought up in mostly new French oak. This is a ripe, sexy, superrich, blockbuster styled effort with awesome aromatics (cassis, spice, tobacco, damp earth, and chocolate), a deep, layered mid-palate, ripe tannins, and an awesome finish. This is a 2019 barrel sample I thought about drinking. |
