Bordeaux 2020 En Primeur - "A Trilogy of Excellence"

Having released his first batch of in-barrel scores, alongside broader commentary on the Bordeaux 2020 vintage, James Suckling has become the first major critic to declare 2020 “excellent”. The veteran taster’s initial impressions suggest that this is every bit the worthy successor to the rich, lush 2018 and the beautifully classical 2019.

Suckling’s tasting in Hong Kong saw him joined by the legendary consultant Michel Rolland via video, and the internationally celebrated winemaker provide fascinating insights into Bordeaux 2020 En Primeur. Rolland himself believes that 2018, 2019 and 2020 represent a new trilogy of outstanding years, similar in this respect to 1988, 1989 and 1990. We believe that the narrative of a “Trilogy of Excellence” for these three vintages (especially given the devastating reports regarding 2021) will be a highly compelling one. Collectors and investors should take note.

We have a reputation in Bordeaux to say the last vintage is the best one...But we did 2018, 2019 and now 2020 … after we did our tastings in the Spring I can say it is a really great vintage. It is different than 2019 with more freshness, more tension, more balance. It’s a good one. Maybe a bit less powerful than 2019 but it made really great wine. I think that we can call it a trilogy now [three consecutive high-quality vintages: 2018, 2019 and 2020].

Ausone 2020 (3x75cl)

Decanter (99)

This is powerful and blows away much of the competition with its depth and layers. This needs you to pull up a chair, take a beat, and let the flavours unroll. There is so much density to the blueberry, bilberry and smoked raspberry fruits that they start out knitted down, then as the oxygen opens them up the body of the wine widens and becomes fleshier and creamier, adding chocolate and mocha notes. The limestone scrape is there in spades through the finish, and this is a cleverly constructed wine. As ever Ausone is just a masterclass in how to take apart and then put back together a terroir. Great stuff. First year of official conversion to organic farming. 100% new oak, some in 30hl oak casks. Could go up after tasting in bottle, a potential 100 points.

Canon 2020 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (98-100)

The 2020 Canon is a blend of 68% Merlot and 32% Cabernet Franc, aging for 18 months in French oak, 50% new. It weighs in with 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.53. Deep garnet-purple colored, it bursts from the glass with vivacious notes of Morello cherries, redcurrant jelly, wild blueberries and black raspberries, plus hints of powdered cinnamon, clove oil, star anise and dusty red soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is an exercise in grace, delivering exquisitely ripe, finely pixilated tannins and bold freshness to support the tight-knit black, red and blue fruit layers, finishing long with loads of exotic spices and mineral sparks. An exhilarating triumph!

Vinous (NM) (96-98)

The 2020 La Gaffelière has an intriguing, complex nose, a mélange of red and black fruit, cigar box, undergrowth and mint, quite mercurial in the glass as it opens with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, a beautiful seam of acidity and perhaps the most satin-like texture I have encountered on a young La Gaffelière. It sashays to a harmonious and precise finish and lingers with wonderful mineralité. This is a magnificent prospect.

A wine that’s going to flirt with perfection is the 2020 Château Larcis Ducasse. It’s a Saint-Emilion with an almost Pomerol-like depth and power paired with classic Saint-Emilion aromatics and minerality. Incredibly pure notes of black cherries, blackberries, white flowers, truffle, and leafy herb notes all emerge on the nose and it’s full-bodied, with a layered, multi-dimensional texture, thrilling tannins, and a finish that won’t quit. Denis Durantou estate up on the limestone plateau of Castillon, now vinified by his daughter Noémie Durantou. Deeply coloured, ruby in colour with fleshy fruit, not giving a whole lot away right now, but this is a fairly discreet vintage in many ways. The dominant impression is of a rough linen and wet stone texture that reflects its limestone soils. Width and depth as it opens in the palate, serious for now but with plenty to give. A yield of 45hl/ha. 3.6pH.

The Drinks Business (98-100)

Montrose is for me a complete revelation, simply as good a Médocain en primeur sample as I can recall tasting. It is on a par with Lafite and Latour 2016, with the same wondrous layered complexity. The quality of the tannins is breath-taking and it is a wine that is undoubtedly of 1st growth quality. It has elegance, refinement, depth and concentration – and an almost unprecedented beauty on the nose and the palate that shocked me. I simply had no idea that Montrose could produce a wine so beautiful at this stage.

Ranking with the top wines of the vintage, the dense purple-hued 2020 Château Pape Clement offers a sensational bouquet of pure crème de cassis interwoven with notes of liquid violets and classy oak. Possessing flawless balance, full-bodied richness, and ultra-fine tannins, it excels in this vintage and has a pretty, elegant, yet also layered and concentrated profile. It will drink well with just short-term cellaring yet evolve gracefully for 20-30 years. I was able to taste this on multiple occasions, and it always checked in near the upper end of the scale. Rauzan-Segla 2020 (3x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96-98+)

Composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Rauzan-Ségla is aging for 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% new. It has an alcohol of 13.5% and a pH of 3.74. Deep purple-black colored, aromas of blackcurrant cordial, stewed red and black plums, chocolate-covered cherries and raspberry coulis erupt from the glass, leading to an undercurrent of tar, licorice, red roses and menthol, plus a hint of unsmoked cigars. The medium-bodied palate is elegant and yet manages seriously impressive intensity, which is well-sustained throughout the mid-palate and finish. Refined and refreshing, delivering beautifully soft, silt-like tannins and bags of bright red and black fruits, it finishes with amazing length and a stunning perfume. Between this and Château Canon, Nicolas Audebert and his team have knocked it out of the park this vintage. “The mildew was our biggest challenge this year,” said Technical Director Nicolas Audebert. “It is a very heterogeneous vineyard. More than 20 different soil types. And it is true, the August rain was not the same across Bordeaux. We have 40% Merlot in the blend, like Palmer, which works well this year. The impact of the dry period was stronger on the Cabernet Sauvignon. We had very small berries. The effect of the dryness and the ripeness is there in the wine, but there is no excess of ripeness. There is a little bit of an exotic style. It could be a place where you have a mix of culture and civilization. It is generous but extremely elegant. This was a vintage where we had to fight to get it. It’s like in rugby, when you win by just one point on a rainy day. This is a special wine for me—it has the taste of victory!”

Medium to full-bodied, balanced, and just about seamless, it’s going to require 5-6 years of bottle age but should cruise for 20-25 years in cold cellars.

Larcis Ducasse 2020 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (96-99)

A wine that’s going to flirt with perfection is the 2020 Château Larcis Ducasse. It’s a Saint-Emilion with an almost Pomerol-like depth and power paired with classic Saint-Emilion aromatics and minerality. Incredibly pure notes of black cherries, blackberries, white flowers, truffle, and leafy herb notes all emerge on the nose and it’s full-bodied, with a layered, multi-dimensional texture, thrilling tannins, and a finish that won’t quit. If you get a chance, buy it. The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, aging in 55% new French oak.

James Suckling (98-99)

This is a young red with great intensity and vision that starts off slowly and builds with energy and verve. It’s so minerally with salty, chalky and spice undertones to the cool and vibrant, purple and subtle-fruit flavors. The tannins are wonderfully toned and polished and build on the palate to deliver something very special.

Decanter (93)

Denis Durantou estate up on the limestone plateau of Castillon, now vinified by his daughter Noémie Durantou. Deeply coloured, ruby in colour with fleshy fruit, not giving a whole lot away right now, but this is a fairly discreet vintage in many ways. The dominant impression is of a rough linen and wet stone texture that reflects its limestone soils. Width and depth as it opens in the palate, serious for now but with plenty to give. A yield of 45hl/ha. 3.6pH.

Montrose 2020 (6x75cl)

The Drinks Business (98-100)

Montrose is for me a complete revelation, simply as good a Médocain en primeur sample as I can recall tasting. It is on a par with Lafite and Latour 2016, with the same wondrous layered complexity. The quality of the tannins is breath-taking and it is a wine that is undoubtedly of 1st growth quality. It has elegance, refinement, depth and concentration – and an almost unprecedented beauty on the nose and the palate that shocked me. I simply had no idea that Montrose could produce a wine so beautiful at this stage.

Pape Clement 2020 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (97-99)

Ranking with the top wines of the vintage, the dense purple-hued 2020 Château Pape Clement offers a sensational bouquet of pure crème de cassis interwoven with notes of liquid violets and classy oak. Possessing flawless balance, full-bodied richness, and ultra-fine tannins, it excels in this vintage and has a pretty, elegant, yet also layered and concentrated profile. It will drink well with just short-term cellaring yet evolve gracefully for 20-30 years. I was able to taste this on multiple occasions, and it always checked in near the upper end of the scale. This is a gorgeous wine in the making.

James Suckling (99-100)

The aromas are already exceptional, showing crushed-stone, limestone and salt character to the dark fruit and bark. It’s full-bodied, yet agile. Floats on the palate, then kicks in with loads of ultra fine tannins. The intensity and verve of this wine promises true greatness.

James Suckling (99-100)

So much blackcurrant, graphite and iodine character. Full-bodied. Incredible quality to the tannins. They are polished yet powerful. It’s so long and complete with such depth and toned muscles. Vertical. Very fresh and energetic. Will it be better than the famous 2015? Maybe the best ever. From organically grown grapes. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.
