2018 |
Aile d'Argent 2018 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (93-95)There was no malolactic fermentation and no Muscadelle this year—both unusual for Aile d’Argent. Composed of 55% Sauvignon Blanc and 45% Sémillon (harvested August 30 to September 5), the 2018 Aile d'Argent has 13% alcohol and is a little reticent to begin, offering fragrant notions of lemongrass, freshly chopped ginger and lemon tart with a core of fresh pineapples, white peaches and aniseed. The palate is rich, sultry and exotic with loads of spices and tropical fruit and an electric backbone of acid, finishing very long.

Alcee 2016 (6x75cl) Vinous - Neal Martin (91)The 2016 Alcée, the Castillon Côte de Bordeaux courtesy of Nicolas Thienpont, has an intense yet charming bouquet of brambly red fruit, black tea, cedar and crushed stone aromas. I appreciate the definition and focus here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, nicely focused and quite rigid at the moment, though there is satisfying fruit concentration. The lovely black-pepper- and allspice-infused finish is very appealing. This will require three or four years in bottle but should mature into a wine that will give two decades of drinking pleasure.

2017 |
Alcee 2017 (6x75cl) Vinous - Antonio Galloni (91)The 2017 Alcée has turned out beautifully. Espresso, mocha, sweet red cherry, red plum, mint, cedar and spice give the 2017 very pretty aromatic brightness. Pliant and racy. This mid-weight Nicolas Thienpont's Côtes de Castillon has so much to offer. A touch of whole clusters adds nuance and vibrancy to this very pretty and expressive red. I would give it another year in bottle. There is plenty to look forward to, that is for sure. Tasted three times.

2019 |
Alter Ego de Palmer 2019 (12x37.5cl) Decanter (95)Gorgeous rich dark purple in the glass. Quite jammy and concentrated on the nose, heady and perfumed with a lovely delicate florality to it too. Great freshness on the palate, juicy but a dark blackcurrant and cherry fruit juice. Beautifully balanced with integrated tannins and oak. Well defined fruit, generous and quite abundant against softly grippy, velvety tannins that just give support to the overall frame. It's serious but with a lightness of touch and playfulness - energetic and lively but still with depth. A great Alter Ego and confident winemaking on show.

AltO De Cantenac Brown 2021 (12x75cl)

2021 |
AltO De Cantenac Brown 2021 (12x75cl) Decanter (93)Perfumed black cherries and raspberries on the nose. Lovely sculpting, you get waves of juicy, bright, red summer berries and just-ripe red cherries with creamy, chalky edges. Tannins are present and linger on the tongue, gently gripping the flavours. This has great character, not too dense nor expansive, but good definition, energy and classicism with slate and crushed stone. Touch of bitter black chocolate marks the finish which is extremely attractive. Excellent job from winemaker JosŽ Sanfins.

Amiral de Beychevelle 2019 (6x75cl) Vinous - Neal Martin (89)The 2019 Amiral de Beychevelle takes time to unfurl, revealing black cherries, red plum and light floral scents. There is just a hint of vanilla pod in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and elegant, with sappy black fruit and quite a fine bead of acidity, leading to a cohesive, elegant finish. This is a lovely Amiral from Philippe Blanc and his team.
